I have been seeing some 416 with a 52100 core cutlery and wondering how that is being welded, dry, flux , hi or low temp, etc.

Thanks,

Jim

i have seen some info about them here
Burt Foster does it really well

http://www.burtfoster.com/hunters/laminated hunters.htm

They are dry welded, mig'ed around all 4 sides

Ed is doing some 416 1084 and gives some details here

Bill Wiggins demoed the ABS Hammer-in at Troy Ohio stainless to high carbon steel by using foil to wrap the billet.
mig welding the outsde makes more sense to me

A good anneal cycle is likely important after to counteract the HAZ

Beutiful work, but how does it perform? I know you'd get decent edge holding with 52100, even after the welding heats, but what about resistance to bending and flexing?

...since the 416 is basically soft if you bend a blade it will not spring back as far as expected. the thinner your core the more this shows up."

Yup. Also, because the 416 is so soft, it takes scratches and dents much easier. But it sure looks cool:

Thanks for all the links, I have read the Burt Foster WIP and got great info.

I have to agree with Phillip, It Looks Cool Kitchen cutlery and pocket knife is where I am heading with this. Possibly a couple of my sidekicks

Phillip that is a beautiful knife.
