ive searched the threads, however, i could not find info on 416SS steel. i seen it used for bolster material but all i could find is barstock. anyone know where i can find some flat stock for bolster material? thank you

Not sure I understand your concern. 416SS barstock is routinely availabe in 1/8, 3/16 and 1/4 thickness. What thickness were you looking for?

i thought what i neede ws sheets of the 416ss to make bolster. bar stock seems like it would be difficult.

416 is basically a free-machining version of 410. As there is not much machining you can do on thin sheet, 416 is not generally available in flat stock thiner than .125. So, for liners and such, use 410; for thicker stuff that you wish to machine, use 416.

ok but im still abit confused. when you mean machine the thicker stuff, what are you rferring to. something like milling, grinding, drilling etc. im use to taking a piece of flat stock-cutting it to size with a hacksaw- then drilling and filing it to fit the blade, and finally grinding it to shape. i do hidden tangs. im not to experienced in making guards/bolsters for full tang knives. so do you actually use barstock for guards/bolsters on full tang knives? thank you sir

Ahhh... now it's making sense.

When making a full tang knife, or a folder, the bolsters are applied much like a sandwich - and a 1/8+ bar is ideal to cut the pieces out ofand apply them.

If you are sliding "stacking" layers over your hidden tang, you may well want something thinner - and I have not seen 416 offered that thin. If you want to slide a guard over the tang, you may want even thicker than 1/4.

At any rate, if you can picture a piece of bar stock, maybe 1/8 to 3/8 thick and 1 to 1 1/2 wide and usually about a foot long, it's not hard to hacksaw off the piece you want and start shaping it.

One thing to keep in mind is pins if you are using them. Your pinstock should be the same steel as the stock you are pinning.
