416 Stainless Slotted Guard Blanks x 3/8" Thick

It seems that everyone of the blade supply houses have stopped carrying 416 stainless slotted guard blanks, particularly in the 3/8" thick size.

Anyone know where to get these? I've grown desperate enough that I asked a machine shop that I work with frequently give me a cost.

I prefer the 416 over 316 as it is harder and doesn't scratch as easily and creates a better finish. In addition it can be hardened, whereas 316 cannot.

Thanks in advance for any direction on this.

I'd rather pay $5+to save myself 2 hours of marking, measuring, scribing fine lines, drilling, slitting through with my metal saw, fine filing, rough filing, and then finally being able to: Fine tune the slot width to achieve a tight finish with the tang, using my hardened file guides . . . which was my main objective.

Before shaping the guard.

Although I have done the above procedure many times.

If I had a solid mill, I'd buy a $120 slitting saw and arbor (?) and make a bunch. It'd be worth my time in the long run.

I've checked at all of the knife making supply houses. They all say that the 416 stainless guards are discontinued. This includes Sheffields. Thanks.

I have a bridgeport and it certainly helps, but I did it by hand for 15 years. I can slot a guard rather precisely in about 15 minutes.

it's a skill, it takes practice, but its definitely worth it

I can't do it in 15 minutes, but I'm stubborn (wife says I can have as many knives as I want in the house as long as I make them all myself...).

GOOD quality chainsaw files make all the difference. I buy them by the dozen from a local hardware supply that sells Husquvarna and Stihl equipment.
they are about 3$ ea and worth a lot more imho
