416 Stainless

Pretty sad that we pay nearly as much for blade and spring steel as we do for frames,
after all don't think many people would use it for blades. Good price?-good luck.
410's an option though a little tougher on bits.
Ken.

I got a 25 pound round bar on ebay for like 45 bucks shipped. I have just been cutting slices off for bolsters but will forge it flat and anneal it in my oven when I need some guard stock.

What he said. The most economical route by far is getting it in round stock on ebay and forging it flat. If you're not set up for forging, then I usually get my 416 bar stock from Sheffield.

Thanks guys for the info.No I"m not set up to do forging.Wish I would have learned years ago but now its just stock removal.Anyway I guess I"ll give Sheffield a call. Thanks again!

Unfortunately if you need to buy barstock it is not cheap. I found several places that have it but the prices are the same or more than the knife suppliers already mentioned. Round stack is the cheapest but you do need to be able to forge.

Not sure where Seaview is, but if you get some round off the bay you could come on down and forge it flat if you would like. Could beat out a couple blades too.

Just googled Seaview, your about as far north as you can get. Your still welcome if you get down to Salem.
