440c or 154CM

I believed they were marginally better steels but I did not know that D2 and S30V were at least 50% better than 154CM, or that they would outcut 154CM by that much.

Dtownknifekid, I would get the Grip in 154CM....it's a good steel and you WILL NOT realize a difference. Know why? Because you will not have the knives to make the comparison. Plus, in my experience, 154CM sharpens easier than D2 and that comes into play after the inital factory edge wears down a bit. Yet, if you took a mesquite branch (for example) and whacked away at it and whittled it down using both a Grip in 154CM and one in D2, I still would be willing to bet you wouldn;t find a difference in edge quality.

Nothing wrong with 440C on U.s. made knives but I'd go with the 154CM. I've found it to be more rust resistant and hold an edge longer than 440C. For the price point I believe that 154CM outwieghs $30V. The red class benchmades that offer 440C steel are really using 440A steel. It's just that the Taiwanese use 440C as the designator for any 440 series steel that has .75% carbon or better. In the U.S. we consider 440A to have .65%-.75% carbon.

Doesn't matter..
If you can score the 440C version for cheaper, go with it. Great knife regardless
D2, you're gonna need diamonds or ceramics to cut it quickly

dtownknifekid,

D2 if used until dull is very difficult to sharpen without diamond stones.
The trick is to never let it get to that point. Touch it up before it gets dull.
Touching up a decently sharp D2 blade is easy. Once it stops shaving
touch it up. It will take a long time to get there though.
