im looking for 440C to make a fillet knive. this will be my first blade from stainles. other than mcmaster carr i havent been able 2 fird anyone else that sells it in flat stock. where else can i find if for sale? 1/16 to1/8 thick and 1 to1.5 wide id like at least 18" so i can make at least 2 blades. since its stainless i will be send it for ht so can i grind the edge as thin as i want it beforehand or do i still leave it thicker at the edge to prevent warp? thanx, willy

Admiral has it but in 72" lengths, maybe give them a call see if they will sell less. I do all my grinding after HT, not much to remove for 1/16", just keep it cool

I'll go against common knowledge here. I grind my fillet knives befoe HT. They are made from either 440c or D-2. I grind them to .015" at the edge. I have yet to have one warp on me. I must admit though, there is a bit of an uneasy feeling upon opening the foil pack. But like I said they all have been straight and warp free. I do plate quench but that still leaves the edge unsupported. I feel that if the grind is even, there will be no issues.

Just my .02 worth
Nick:)
