I have a NMFSH (.311" thick) it used to be white and you can see some of the coating around the scales, but it sure turned out nice.
There's also black marks on the top and bottom of the handle they are smooth, but they were hidden under the coating. I tried to photograph them. I'll email hi rez pics upon request.
It's been sharpened on a leather strop but never used. I never made it that far.
