Cabela's has bulk ammo:

230gr lead-round-nose $69.99 / 300
200gr semi-wadcutter $69.99 / 300
230gr full-metal-jacket $74.99 / 300

That's a little less than my local gun shop. Haven't checked Wal-Mart. Anyone tried any of these?

Mike,

Not a bad price for new brass.

My quess is that it has been reloaded a number of times.

Says new manufactured in big, bold letters.

Also comes in a .50 cal ammo can.

Any guesses as to which ones my Springfield Armory Micro-compact is going to like? What's the difference between "lead round nose" and "full metal jacket" (aside from the obvious).

Mike

You can get good quality Winchester 230gr range (fmj) at Academy Sports for the same or less than the Cabelas price (Walmart in my area is higher). Its a bit hotter than your standard practice round which is good if you plan on carrying a high quality round like Federal HydraShock. I'm always a bit leary of "mystery rounds".

I bought:

20 PMC Eldorado Starfire $12.95
50 Speer Lawman FMJ - $13.95
50 Remington UMC FMJ - $13.95

when I bought the pistol. Weather has been crap, so I still haven't made it to the range and fired it.

I've been told to expect lower velocities with this 3" barrel, so maybe LRN makes more sense than FMJ?

Lead round nose (RNL) and full metal jacket (FMJ) bullets have roughly the same ogive (nose profile). You might experience 'failures to feed' (jam) more with RNL and will tend to foul the barrel (leave deposits). I stopped using RNL in the late sixties and switched to softpoint partially jacketed with a softer lead nose) to reduce fouling. I use FMJ for practice on occasion. Most often now, I pratice with the same ammunition as I carry. It might me significantly more expensive, but the "surprises" will be minimal if the maker has good QA in their manufacturing practices and processes. Additionally, RNL and FMJ are notorious for excessive (unwanted) penetration in human tissue. As such, neither is particularly effective as self defense rounds compared to the numerous hollowpoint designs.

Bulk (1000 fmj rnd) 9mm ammunition should be in the $110 price range while 1000 fmj rnd .45 should be $165 from http://aimsurplus.com/acatalog/AIM_Pistol_Ammunition_2.html.

That's .23$/rnd vs .165$/rnd. If you intend to shoot a lot this is an important lesson.

You should be able to find a gunshow or wholesale dealer in your area that you should be able to pick this ammo up from at the better prices.

This is true; BUT!

If you are going to shoot alot you have to reload!

And it's alot of fun.

I have a small Dillon press and reload 38s, 9s and various 45s.

Reloaded lead 45s are fine, but I don't like lead 9s (FMJ).

I thought about the ammo price when I bought this 3" .45 for self-defense. I don't really expect to shoot _it_ all that much. If I really found myself spending a lot of time at the range, I'd go to an accurate .45, or perhaps something else.

Same goes for general plinking -- I've wanted a little .22 pistol forever.

I just really only need to shoot _this particular_ .45 until I feel comfortable with it.

Damn! I took my Suzuki DR-Z400S up to Rampart Range this morning. Great drive. Great weather. Lots of people up there plinking.

Wound up sharing a position with a guy named Eugine. Very personable. He was shooting a new 30-30 Marlin and a little .22 revolver. Also apparently a "knife nut", as he just had to so my MOD Trident and couldn't wait to show me his Blue BM940. Great knives, BTW, just wish they'd get rid of the damned dual thumbstuds.

Anyway, went through my 100rds like it was NOTHING! Just plinking at garbage, but it seemed like the Remington UMC shot a lot better than the Speer Lawman. Didn't even try any of the hollow-points.

I'm starting to see why cost always comes up in these discussions. That's $27 in about 1/2 hour!

Try Fiocchi FMJ. It's as hot as duty rounds and the cleanest
burning of the various brands of practice ammo.

www.natchezss.com has Winchester .45acp FMJ all day long for $11.91 in boxes. That is 71.46 for the math challenged.

The stuff you are looking at is new ammo made by a reloader. ie new brass.

Lead is 1/2 the cost of jacketed and only used by us cheapskate reloaders. I think my reloads are about $3 / box.

*Pick up your brass and give it to someone who reloads!!!

!!! Buy a Ruger Mark-II .22lr pistol and use that for 80% of your shooting. It will pay for itself in no time. (90c a box!) Also, you need another gun for those who you invite to the range who don't have a gun.

make good friends with someone who has a Dillon 550!!
or go buy one.....it will pay for itself in a month.
