485 Valet Discussion Thread

I have actually become a little excited by this offering. I will be visiting my local brick and mortar store to place an order.

Just ordered one from Knifeworks! Can not wait for it to arrive.

The 485 is a great looking knife and would ordinarily be right in my wheelhouse were it not for the handle length. I really need at least a 4" handle to get a good grip on a folder. I'm willing to shrink that down just a little to carry a knife like my M4 Mini-Grip. But I struggle to get a secure purchase on my Sequel and it's got a longer handle than the 485 does. As much as it pains me to do this, I'm going to have to pass on the 485. :(

My order was also this morning for a 485 Valet from KnifeWorks with a free Benchmade H&K Pika II. It should be a handy dandy EDC.

I just picked up my 485 at Recon 1! Very nice office EDC! Great little blade and the slender profile disappears in the corner of my pocket. Nice to finally have a truly small BM Axis folder.

I also picked up my new 484-1 and my new 615BK limited edition while I was at Recon 1. It's a good day!

Nice set!

I should go to Recon 1 for my Benchmade purchases. It's only 18 miles away!

If you live that close and you haven't been there yet you NEED to check them out. There is not a better blade shop in Southern California. I travel all over the Western states and check out all of the knife shops I can find and I can tell you that only Knives Ship Free in Oregon and Blade HQ in Utah have better selections than Recon 1. The people at Recon 1 are awesome and although everything is marked at full msrp they discount everything and I have never paid more than the going on-line price for anything there.

If you happen to want any of the 3 knives I put in the picture, only the 615BK is in stock right now (they had 2 more as of yesterday). They only received one 484-1 and one 485 in their initial shipment and I bought both of them. But, they have more coming.

Thanks. I'll check out Recon 1 one of these days. I've been to Plaza Cutlery in Costa Mesa and Grommet's Cutlery in Moreno Valley. Both are really good.

When is benchmade going to release them to the public? I put my down payment on one through blade HQ. When does anyone think the 485 will be in stock?

Don't know why Blade HQ doesn't have any in stock. Other online retailers are filling orders. You should contact them for an ETA and maybe get back the deposit and buy it elsewhere.

I got mine (#300) on Friday at a brick and mortar but they also sell online. Keep looking. They're out there. I hope you find it soon and love it as much as I do.

I hope this knife opens and closes as smoothly as my trusty 940. I'm waiting for more feedback before ordering!

My Valet arrived over the weekend. I really like this knife and there were a couple of features that surprised me. First was the G10 backspacer... I realize now that BM's photos showed this but I didn't give it any thought. The second is that the liners are drilled which is a nice feature. The scales are just the right size to accommodate a 4-finger grip.

The geometry of the 940 and the 485 are very different from one another. The 940 is one of the nicest BMs to open because of a number of factors that the 485 doesn't have. The length and weight of the 940 blade and the distance from the thumb stud to the pivot point make for a nice easy opening. The 485 has a short, light weight blade and the distance from thumb stud to pivot is short, making the path of the thumb stud a very tight arc. This makes for a knife that requires more thumb pressure to get the blade moving. Also, since you cannot get much of your thumb behind the thumb stud you are required to press harder on it just to get traction. Very different from the 940. The actual movement of the blade is still very smooth, but the effort it takes to open a knife is all about the initial pressure it takes to get the blade past the detent, and in this area you cannot really compare the 940 to the 485.

So, if you just want a small knife that opens like a 940 you will be disappointed with the 485. If you want the slim profile and a great small EDC blade in a smaller package than the 940 you will like it.

Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it.
