Here is a design I came up with for my fourth knife. (stand by for third knife which should be finished soon) It is based off of a few different ideas that I've seen. After last months Blade magazine, I was inspired to make a big chopper with a horse stall mat handle so this is what I came up with. It has a large finger choil, which most of the competition knives that I've scene don't have in this way but I like the look of it. It isn't a competition knife per say but I like the idea behind them. I'll be making it out of 1095, full flat, convex edge. What do you guys think? Comments/suggestions/ideas welcome.

Nice looking patterns.
Take those patterns and use them like a knife for dicing onions. Does the bird's head or your knuckles hit the cutting board? If so, raise the handle a bit. Otherwise they look fine for a huge Santoku and Chef's knife. I will tell you that ,while making a huge kitchen knife is fun, most of the time a smaller one will be more useful. If they are to be camp knives and used for chopping wood, killing Grizzlies, etc., then the handle ergonomics look fine as they are.
Post more pics as the project progresses.

I think they look great:thumbup: I would change one thing if I were making them though. I would get rid of all of the finger grooves. They can be great, but likely they will be a hinderance and it will take more effort in finishing the handle. Just my thoughts. The design is darn nice:)

I agree with what NWA said about the finger grooves, other that that the look awsome. can't wait to see the finished poduct.

I'll take that into consideration. I have made a couple with finger grooves already but they were fighter size knives and had micarta handles. I can see that it will be tough to grind the rubber handles with them so maybe its best to leave them off these. BTW, these will be made from 1/4'' stock so they will be camp-knife/wood-choppers/zombie-head-removers.
