Hello,

I'm looking to purchase a 4x36" belt grinder for some entry level blade making. I was wondering if anybody knew of a supplier of 4x36 inch belts and what grits I would need to get started.

Thank you!

You've asked a pretty broad question about belts to get started, depending on what you want to make will dictate some of what you'll need. Will you be forging, cutting or just grinding? To start you will need a variety from course to fine belts then there is the question of Ceramic, AO or Zirconia. I would suggest a good book on Bladesmithing and there are quite a few out there. Here is a company I use my belts I'm not endorsing them just happens to be who I use. Good Luck

Thank you Dopic. I apologize on my vagueness!

I will be using 1090 carbon steel which will just be a stock removal job with my own heat treating. My objective is kitchen cutlery, primarily chef knives.

The grinder is a cheap harbor freight bench grinder. I'm sure it won't provide any overly stellar results but it should be a decent entry level grinder.

I took a look at supergrit and they seem to have a great selection and fair prices. I'll definitely keep them noted.

Thanks!

If your going to just grind an there's nothing wrong with that, no matter who you use lean towards the zirconia or ceramic belts. The Aluminum Oxide belts are better on wood and plastic but even annealed carbon steel will chew up an AO belt fast. Also speaking from experience 1090 is a hard steel to get the heat treat right maybe look at 1080 or 1084 there both a little more forgiving.

trugrit has belts for all kinds of grinders. I get my 2x72, 4x36 & 1x30 from them. they ship fast and good belts.

As far as belts go, there is a grit comparison chart on here if you look in the knifemaker forums. I just bought a ton of belts and tried them out to see what I like, I'm still very new so wouldn't feel comfortable offering an opinion on which is the best. I can just tell you to buy and try.
