Need some help from the experts. As we have close to 8 acres of rolling countryside, I feel the need(ok, want) for one of these. But, I know little to nothing about them. I'm a pretty big guy, so I'm leaning toward something at least 500 cc. Pretty much narrowed it down to either a Honda or a Suzuki, based upon the current offers around the local dealers. (Suzuki 750 is the same money as the Honda 500). Can I get away with the Honda 420 version? How big do I need to go with one of these and exactly what can you do with one, beyond simply riding around screaming your lungs out while having fun? Can you actually plow snow or tow a tiller with one? I know I can pull some kind of cart to carry stuff, but I'm wondering what else can be done. Thanks, in advance, for any advice here.

Get a Honda the biggest u can get it'll last forever I have a foreman 500 I do mostly mud riding I am very happy with it.

Very much considering that one. Would love the biggest Honda(650, I think), but it's way out of my price range. And, like I mentioned, the Suzuki 750 has 30% more engine for the same monitas. Is the Honda worth the extra? I've owned plenty of both Honda and Suzuki products and have had little to no issues with either, so I can go either way here.

they're handy for hauling around chainsaws & such, the bambi you just shot, pulling a stuck truck out of a mudhole, etc...
good tools to have.

I weigh 325 pounds, and my lttle 300 Polaris 4X4 works fine for me. With it's low gearing, it will drag large trees around and can even be used to move my camper. However, if a person does serious mud bogging, that bike would tend to loose power and bog down. Also, you may not use one very often, but get a winch. They are handy for more things that pulling the ATV out.

I have had several ATVs over the years for our small farm; Polaris 500, Yamaha 750 Griz and 550 Griz.

Presently have a 09 Yamaha Grizzly 550. Plenty of power for snow plowing and hauling. Also has power assist steering and is very easy to turn the handle bars, especially helpful for the wife.

I downgraded from the 750cc to the 550cc as I wanted the power assist and, for my purposes, do not miss the extra power of the 750.

We use the ATV every single day of the year. Some of the chores it handles: haul hay bales to the horses, pull muck wagon, pull manure spreader, pull heavy harrow to level gravel and dirt, pull log wagon, ride to the mail box, plow snow.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of 'em, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Polaris, Kawasaki etc. Good luck with your choice.

I have a Honda 400 AT Rancher and love it- no need for more power for me. A consideration is maneuverability. My 400 is a medium frame and squeezes between trees and turns sharp. If crawling over a log and belly out- I can pick up the rear and roll it forward. I pack a cable come along, a couple nylon straps for trees, small shovel, clevis and small section of logging chain. Never been anywhere I cannot get out of. I am 5'10" and 230lbs.

For simply riding without using it to work with, I love our little Honda 250 Recon. Put Mudlights on the rear and it goes "most" anywhere I want to- I would keep it out of the mud though, it lacks the torque to dig its way out if it goes deep.

i weight 230 and my wife and i ride fine on my 1998 300 Honda 4trax 4x4.. love my wheeler. hondas are tits. bar none. the 400 or so would do you fine. what are you going to do with this other than ride around and waste gas?

gosh i hope it aint the same ones i see around here. POS. just my 2 cents. i would rather have a suzuki. i have seen many polaris getting worked on at the local bike shops MANY.

Those must be the made in mexico models!

We've had several for the last 10-12 years and they are sweet machines! I'm sure there are lemons in all things, but if they are good enough for the Green Beret.... they are good enough for me.

Well, 8 acres isn't much for entertainment purposes. I used and abused an old Honda fourtrax 300 for work... ...those things are indestructible, great on fuel, will chug up anything in low gear, will tow a small trailer, push snow, etc. Where the Honda was lacking was the fun factor, it was locked into 4x4, had very little suspension travel, and though it was fun to rip through the gears it really was a dog for power.

My favorite personal ATV was a 05 Suzuki King Quad 700, single cylinder, Independent Rear Suspension, fuel injected. The Suzuki would work just as hard as the Honda but would also beat a 400ex in a race and do almost 70mph down the highway. The ride was great and while it doesn't land the softest you could jump it a little. Selectable 4x4 lets you hang the rear end out. It's got enough power to play in the mud and snow but the big single cylinder still got around 25 mpg which is good, the big v-twins will struggle to get into double digit mpg.

I also had a 02 Kawasaki Prairie 650. This one had a v-twin (sounds great and really moves), and solid rear axle. With the solid rear it would be better for a work ATV for pulling or carrying a heavy load. The Solid rear is also very stable for corners, and goofing around, it sucks for clearance and the ride isn't as good as IRS. The V-twin is addicting, it would really pull... ...just take extra fuel with you.

Personally I wouldn't buy a Honda, when you compare features/performance they just don't stand up to their competitors I can't quote stats specifically but for the same price you'll get a Honda with air cooled motor, carb., drum brakes, 3" of suspension travel compared to any of the other Japanese machines will have 150cc bigger motor, liquid cooled, FI, disc brakes, and 6" of travel. They charge a lot for the privilege of having H O N D A written on your tank.

I'd also stay away from Polaris but a lot of people buy them.

Many things built to military contract are not the same things put out on commercial lines. Thank God- our men and women deserve a break when they can get it.

Hondas are a little pricey but I can say that mine has had minimal care, left many times in the elements and still starts up and performs. They do seem a little stodgy until the engine warms up though. I have the Rancher and 2 Recons.

I can't argue with you there, our work 4trax never asked for much and always fired right up. One day I thought for sure I was going to kill it, I drove it into a bog that didn't look that deep but ended up being up to the headlights, then wrapped a bunch of barbed wire and a fence post around the rear axle and one of the fronts... ...finally got it out and it looked like the swamp thing with all the moss hanging off it. It ran great but it probably still has peaces of moss in it crack and crevices.

Have you considered a UTV? They can be just as much fun as an ATV but are two passenger and has a greater utility potential because of the bed in the back.

LOL. I have buried mine several times. One word of caution after getting in above the axles in mud- flush the rear brake cables & return springs well. If the mud cakes up in there it will cause the brakes to not release cleanly and cause excess wear to the rear brake pads.

I have owned them all and they are all reliable.. I have a 550 Polaris XP and it is awesome
Nothing rides like Polaris. Are they are refined as a Honda or Yamaha, probably not.. I once had a Polaris 800 and bought
My wife a 700 king quad thinking it would be easier for her to drive. The first day I rode the 800 and her the king quad..
That was the last day she rode the king quad. He said the Polaris was so much nicer to ride.
I had bad (expensive ) problems with my Bombadier.. My honda was awesome. Suzuki was trouble free.. I think Polaris has the strongest motors and best ride.

I've used Honda and liked them, quiet and reliable.
