4x4 ATVs?

I have had several ATVs over the years for our small farm; Polaris 500, Yamaha 750 Griz and 550 Griz.

Presently have a 09 Yamaha Grizzly 550. Plenty of power for snow plowing and hauling. Also has power assist steering and is very easy to turn the handle bars, especially helpful for the wife.

I downgraded from the 750cc to the 550cc as I wanted the power assist and, for my purposes, do not miss the extra power of the 750.

We use the ATV every single day of the year. Some of the chores it handles: haul hay bales to the horses, pull muck wagon, pull manure spreader, pull heavy harrow to level gravel and dirt, pull log wagon, ride to the mail box, plow snow.

I don't think you could go wrong with any of 'em, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki, Polaris, Kawasaki etc. Good luck with your choice.

Yamaha does not make a 750, wish they did, but for now 700 is as big as you can get.

I have a 2009 Grizzly 700 with power steering, and absolutely love it. It has plenty of power, and the EPS is great for those long days on the trail.

Really leaning towards the Suzuki 750. But, I gotta check one more dealership and see what they can offer.

GrJfer,
You are right about the Yamaha, I stand corrected.
I had the 700, but that particular year it was actually slightly less ccs than that.
Nice ATV in that photo, BTW.

Do you really need 4x4 and the big engine on 8 acres? Probably not. If you want it fine. I have a hand-me-down Honda 300 Fourtrax and it has served me well. I am 6'2" and 300#'s. I lease 1000 acres and the little Honda has never let me down. I'm just saying, access your situation and need.

750 for 8 acres?? to me thats overkill. save the $$ and go smaller. do you have wide trails? trails at all?

same here. not 1000 acres but at least 150-200. i dont need a 750 for that. i use mine hauling deer, pulling small trailers and etc

If you are looking for fast, go for a dirt bike.
ATV's are great work horses, the 4X4 ATV's are like a modern day mule. Loadem up for work and they'll carry you and the tools, saving you time and energy working on your ground. Another thing you might want to look for if you deal with a lot of steep and tight areas where an ATV can tractor up and engine brake down is helpful. The only reason I'd look for large displacement (over 500cc), is if you have a lot of open area to cover, riding at sustained maximum speed.

You guys are probably right. I think what's throwing me towards the Suzuki 750(2011 model) is that they've got it sale priced down to the same price as the 2012 Honda 500. I can save about a grand, by getting the Honda 420, so I might do that.

Once you have one you'll wonder how you lived without it. And they ride better than the Tractor. :D

I've owned a couple of Honda's and they are good machines, but I've had a 660 Yamaha Grizzly for almost 10 years and would replace it with a 700 Grizz if I were lookig for a new machine. Independant rear suspension, selectable 2wd, 4wd, and full 4wd modes, water cooled engine, power steering, and American Made are the reasons why I would go with the 700.

I've used my 660 for sport riding, jumped it, burried it in mud, forded creeks, hauled chainsaws, pulled trailer loads of wood, and sprayed with a 25 gallon sprayer strapped on the back.

Consider your uses and features you need/want before you purchase as there are alot of good machines available. Don't be afraid to buy used either - Look at all the different models and test drive them too. Have fun with your selection process.

Honda makes a very reliable machine for sure! My very first was also their first (I think) it was a 350 and the year was 86... I loved it and it ran perfect and would go through a lot. The ride was not too soft though. Maybe they have independant suspension now, I am not sure on that. That's what I loved about my 700 Polaris... independant suspension was awesome.

What ever you decide to get, you'll love it. I have an older Polaris and it's only a 250, it gets plenty of use. I've had it for about 11 years and never felt it was underpowered.

I use it mostly for yard work and hunting. It will haul as much firewood as I can fit in the bucket-trailer, plus it's fun in the snow.

Well, the deal is done. Ended up buying from the local dealer, instead of the dealer 40 miles away. They gave me a heck of a deal on a 2011 Suzuki KingQuad 500. Knocked off lots on the price, pretty much gave me the fancy wheels and very much upgraded tires(plus, I get to keep the factory wheels and tires, too!). Fuel injected, liquid cooled, shaft drive, automatic transmission, 4 wheel drive or 2 wheel drive. They even threw in two really nice helmets and a padded rear storage thing. Here's what I got(yes, Yellow):

Great choice!! I still miss by 700 KQ, it's a great machine.

Remember to keep it rubber side down.

good buy. dont worry about the yeller. it will get dirty soon enoough. plus you can get those camo body covers if you think the yeller is too bright.

Congratulations! Let me be the first(?) to suggest a class or riding with locals who have experience. Goggles to protect from eye pokes, leather gloves to protect from briars and wild rose.... always shift your body/weight uphill when sidehilling... :) Once you get comfortable with them, they are indespensible!

Bill

I'll second the riders course. Most manufactures offer it for free our even will pay you to take it. Congratz on the new KQ, sounds like you got a good deal. Ride on & ride safe.
