5” folder

I was recently in a gas station with a friend, who took one look at a positively massive folder and said, “Dude, that knife is awesome!”
I, quite reasonably, reacted as if he’d announced his plans to marry a popcorn maker, and admonished him to stay far away from the wily temptations of the plasticky bling in the case.
He, however, challenged me to find a better knife of similar size (4.5”-6” blade) in the same price range of $25-40. I’ve been searching around in The Bay and here on the exchange for Cold Steel folder and have found the Luzon, which fits the bill, but anyone else have good suggestions?
Thanks!

What's he planning to do with the knife? If he wants to use it hard or chop with it, I'd say convince him to spend more and get something like a Rajah II. Asking for an oversized knife in that price range just doesn't make sense. Sure, it's possible to do it, but you'd have to make so many sacrifices in other areas to come in under budget that the end product will be unusable.

If he's not going to use it hard, though, he could just get an Opinel No 12, which is good quality and comes in under budget with a 4.85" blade.

i see the cold steel drop point voyager xl for $54 and the tanto xl voyager for $52 on a well known site that delivers tons of stuff to your doorstep, on a knife that size you want a good reliable lock like the triad lock, i believe the 6 inch ti-lite is also in the same price range while the 4 inch one is around $45

I second the pocket bushman. Not the most one hand friendly, but would scratch the ridiculously large folder itch and provide a measure of safety against foolish antics not provided by the gas station knife case.
I like the PB, but it's a lot like a Glock. Completely passively safe until you handle it wrong 😉

That's a good suggestion though.

I convinced him not to buy it, thankfully, but getting him to expand his budget is a harder thing. He's happy enough with his newer version Buck 110, and the XL folder is more of a "for grins and giggles" thing/exercise in ridiculous things. I'll keep an eye out for a user CS...

For reference, it was a very typical ultra-crap style 5" bowie with Plastic Magic handles and the American flag emblazoned every which way on it. Simply speaking, it was the kind of knife that hillbillies buy when they're drunk with their friends out buying another six pack.

Thanks everyone for the replies!

Buy the same knife, from the same place!

It's better, since it's yours!!!

You own it!

Cut paper!

Cut yourself!

It's YOURS!

Try this method of closing the Pocket Bushman. I picked this up from a post by FortyTwoBlades FortyTwoBlades . Works like a champ and I'm never in fear of slicing my hands.

That's actually how I go about it. It actually doesn't get carried a whole lot more because of my tendency to carry smaller knives than anything else. Came close to cutting myself once, I was being a fool and my hands slipped somehow.
