My older 4.1 for comparison to my new 5.1.

The pictures speak for themselves. Look at that choil...perfect, as is the gimping.
Gotta tell you about sharpness right out of the box...slices phone book paper easily with no hangup.
I must say, this exceeds my expectations.
Well done Guy.

You don't have a true sense of sharpness until you have a shaved spot on your arm :D

What type of handle did you choose?

Very nice! I like how dark and rich the handle looks! Congratulations! Got a name yet?

It's a green canvas handle, but I have a confession...I was oiling down a couple of blades with some mineral oil and in the process inadvertently left a fingerprint of mineral oil on the handle. How could I possibly take a photo with a distracting smudge? So I lightly covered the knife in the oil and rubbed it down really well and the result was a darker green . I'm Okay with it.

Cool! I have a hard time telling the difference between well-oiled green and black on my phone. For better or worse, the oil only lasts a few days.

Its a blasted finish, but I dont know what the blasting media is. I wouldnt be surprised if it was ceramic beads or if it was even steel shot. Guy wont say becuase its classfied. I can say I havent ever seen blasting that looked like this until I got my new 5.1

Ok I have to ask but please don't lynch me.... just to be sure, I thought stone washed was preferred over blasted because tumbled or stone washed has better corrosion resistance and a lower friction coefficient.

What am I missing here?

I laways thought this, but Guy has done side by side corrosion tests on the finish. I think It has more to do with what media is used to blast the steel.

I personally like the look of the stonewash finish better, but I know I am probably in the minority.

I went digging on instagram.

I think between being able to do the finish and redo the finish in house, the sharper spines (cause everyone judges a knife on and only on the sharpness of the spine nowadays) AND the microfracture aspect, they went with peening.

I will say quickly that I prefer the finish on my new 5.1 to any finish I've run across. As long as it doesn't rust. But with mine, less likely, since it's 20CV.

I've never seen anything about tumbled vs blasted in terms of corrosion resistance and lower friction so I can't speak to that specifically. I can say that we changed over because of the reasons Guy mentioned in those posts. We didn't worry too much about corrosion resistance at the finish level because the new heat treat has really taken care of that.
