I know I'm getting a 9. Bighoss says I can't not.

The question is: Do I get it now? Or do I get a 5? Or maybe a 4? And then get the 9 down the road?

I realize this is a highly scientific and objective question and I expect an answer just as much so. So whatever the consensus is, I'll do it (so long as it relates to these knives and not to requests for me to box a rabid kangaroo).

If I get enough responses while this bourbon is working, I'll start ordering immediately.

The future is in your hands!

Get the 9 first. it will come in handy in a kangaroo fight...or in general.

Get the 4 and the 5 now. That will give you one for each had AND a virtual 9 (4 + 5 = 9) :D Then get the 9. Or say "What the heck." and order all 3 at once. You know you want them all. You really do.

I do indeed.

Was just reading in another thread that the 4 and the 9 overlap quite a bit with the 9 being more versatile. So maybe I want a 5 (for kitchen) and a 9 (for not kitchen). Thoughts?

Rumor is the 4, 5, and 15 might be getting discontinued. What we know for sure is that the 4 and 5 are about $25 cheaper than the 9 right now. Normally I'd ask what knives you own and what activities the knife will be used for or just tell you to get the 9 first because you can't not have a 9. However the current price and the speculation on future availability are important considerations so I would say get a 4, 5, and 15 now while they're cheap because if the official word comes down that they are discontinued what's left will go quickly and at inflated prices.

So you're saying I can't not NOT have a 9? Who is this really?

I have a 15. The 5 might make a good companion to it (but I do already have a nice chef's knife about that size). I also have a 16 coming.

So while I get that the 4, 5, and 15 might be discontinued, the more pressing question is what will I use? I'll definitely use the 15 in the kitchen. I'll definitely use the 16 when camping. And I suspect I'll use the 9 for splitting firewood. If I have those three (as well as my 8" chef's knife), what additional tasks will I use the 4 or 5 for? I like collecting, but I prefer using.

Still wouldnt be enough. Seriously though. Consider the 4 or 5 first, they are awesome blades and may be discontinued, wouldn't want to miss these. Personally I'd be grabbing the 4.

Though the favored answer among the faithful here will certainly be - get all three, I would have to say get the 4 and the 5 now as they are being discontinued and the two of them can be had a favorable pricing. Sooner or later you are going to have to get a 9 (because you can't not have a 9) but you may find that the 4 and the 5 can do just about everything - except, of course, scratch the itch that only a 9 can.

I don't even own a 4 yet but that should be changing within mere days; have a really like the 9, but got to thinking how the 5 (my fav) and the 4 would make quite the team in the field, especially considering that the 4 lends itself to cross-draw.

Drink more bourbon and order all three. If you regret it later blame the whiskey. Who hasn't done something they regret after a little drinking.

Seriously though I'd get the 4 and 5 first. If they aren't to your liking it shouldn't be hard to get your money back out of them. Excellent value on the price of those right now.

Four, Five, Nine..... The Four for the heavy lifting around camp....., harvesting and splitting wood, draw knifing, etc. ....... The Five will excel at all else...... Kitchen stuff, for certain and once you develop your snap cut, you will find endless joy in flicking through quite large stuff and the little crap like berry canes and viney irritants...... Both blades have different things to teach...... After some time with the Four you will start looking at Kukri like objects with renewed interest......., oh, and remember ..... You can not have a Nine.....LOL.......

Thank you for your interest in my blades and I hope that whatever your choices that you feel you got a good working knife....

I'd have to agree with most here.
Machax, and a Magnum Camp first.
You'll be amazed at how much use they will both see.
While it's true,"You can't not have a BK9"....first experience what all the 4 and 5 can offer first.
You'll be glad you did!

AAAAAHHHHHHH ~~ go ahead and get a #9 and then get a BK every month after that and at the end of the year you will have 12 Becker Knives ~~ then do the same thing until you have them all ~~ just think of fun and the hours and the days and the weeks and the months that you will have with your BK Knives.!*** Then you can start with new Scales and then Custom Sheaths.!* HEY ~~ it is only $$$$ Money and you can't take it with you but you can request to be buried with your Beckers if you want.! Think of all of this as an adventure.**

Thanks, everyone! And thanks, Mr. EB!

Given my upcoming schedule, I ordered the 5. I can find work for that one immediately. The others will be in the pipeline. After watching some vids of batoning with the 4, I get the appeal. That will probably be next. Then the 9 for Fall.

Now, I've heard that the 5 has a slick coating. Should I remove that for kitchen duty? I removed the coating on my 15 and was happy with the results, but that one had the rough coating which hindered slicing ability. Will removing the slick coating on the 5 also improve performance?

I haven't stripped my five yet. The older coating is not grabby like the new coating. It's actually almost slick. I will remove it eventually but I don't feel like it is something that has to happen right away. I stripped my nine shortly after I got it because it was wearing off anyways and it would hold bits of wood in the coating after I processed firewood with it. Good choice on the five. I ordered three Beckers last month and it was like waiting on Christmas morning for them to arrive.

He can not have a 9?!? Why not? :p
Because he clearly doesn't deserve one...
(maybe a little reverse psychology? Tell him he cannot have it, so he wants it that much more)

A lot of us have received the old stock 5s; but the laser logo'd, rougher coated 5s are out there - you could get one. Since I planned on using my 5s primarily for food, I stripped them. I wouldn't expect much wear/flaking in that line of duty; but, at the same time, the coating seems out of place (to me) on a dedicated food knife.

Strip that 5, but leave the coating under the scales for rust protection.
I wouldn't want that coating from the blade rubbing off on my food...
