5" Clip-point in 440C or Aus8

I really like the SOG, it's much nicer than a Gerber Harsey Hunter (strengthwise.)
I need something between my Kershaw Echo & my Cold Steel UWK.

I would go with one of the Benchmade offerings mentioned above. 440C has a much better reputation than AUS8, and Benchmade is said to do a great job of heat-treating 440C.

However, the blade length of the Benchmade knives is 4 inches and not 5 inches. You might have some trouble finding a knife with a blade of five inches, if you want that length exactly. Most hunting knives have blades in the range of 4 - 4.5 inches. Knives that are called "camp" knives usually have 6 - 7 inch blades.

The SOG knife that would interest me is their Field Knife. The latest version has a 5.4 inch blade of S30V. But it is not a clip point.

I just recalled seeing an ad in the latest issue of Blade Magazine for a knife called the Roton Kodiak M5. It is sold by www.knifemart.com. It appears to be a knock-off of the Randall No. 1 with a five inch blade. The ad doesn't say what steel is used, but other Roton knives are made of 440C. Also, I looked at the Knife Mart website and it does not appear that the Kodiak knives are available yet.

Roton USA has been selling some balisong knives for a few years and these have a reputation for good quality.

I agree with Willieboy; I bought a Cold Steel SRK Carbon V in the EARLY 1990's, and it is an awesome knife. Holds it's edge, takes abuse, strong as hell and still RAZOR sharp. No, it is not SS, but keep a light coat of oil on it, and you are golden. On a fishing trip in 93, I cleaned out about 20 or so dog sharks (their skin is like sandpaper), STILL razor sharp afterwards. This knife is great for hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, self-defense, etc.

If you can wait a month or so, Cold Steel has some new fixed blades in the 5" range with AUS-8A steel. I don't know if the pics are up yet but the descriptions are here at www.moteng.com . I'm holding off on a SOG Sogtech until I can see what Cold Steel has to offer.

Small Ka-Bar.

5.5in

1095 (like 440C only tougher IMO and coated so you don't have to worry about oxidation)

Indestructible

'Nuff said.

Yo Ginshun,

My uderstanding is that Carbon V is a high carbon steel. I don't know the compenents of the steel but I do know it is a very tough, easily maintained steel. That is what I look for in a huntung/camping knife.

Carbon V is a 50100 modified , similar to O-1.In any case it's a nice knife steel .
