Today I just finished up 6 knives I had been working on for Christmas. I was ill earlier in the week and was scared I wouldn't get them done in time for this weekend.
I had seen several people stating that they do all their sharpening on a HF 1x30. I had ordered a leather stroping belt a while back so I gave it a shot. Let me just say I'll never go back to my previous, inadequate hand sharpening methods ever again. It took me all of about 5 minutes to put shaving edges on 6 knives and I'm sure I'll only get better with practice.
They are all made from an old colter and my research leads me to believe it is 1080 steel. I haven't had it tested so I can't say for sure, though I treated it as such with my heat treat. They are all flat grind and .125 at the spine. The 4 full tang knives have a 5 inch blade with a 9 inch overall. The 2 antler handled knives have a 4.5 inch blade and a 9.5 inch overall. I apologize for the poor photos, hopefully over the next few months I can get the lighting improved in my shop. As always critiques and suggestions are appreciated.
This one has black and grey linen mycarta for a handle. The thread count must be prettly low on that material as it nearly looks like canvas.
This one turned out my favorite of the group. Full flat grind and has paper mycarta made with tuxedo colored card stock. I was more than pleasantly surprised with how well it turned out.
Black and blue denim mycarta.
Copper pins and hickory that I harvested myself. Turned out having a lot of good color and movement though most of the pattern was too large to show much of on a knife this size.
These have the best guard fits I have achieved in my brief time attempting to make knives. I lightly dimpled the front of the guards and I was well pleased with the finish.
Thank you for looking and Merry Christmas! I pray everyone has a safe, healthy and happy holiday wherever they may travel.
