5"(ish) blade for general camp/backpacking duties - ESEE 4/5/Fallkniven S1/????

Definitely have a look at the Becker BK2. Granted, I'm a biggish guy but when I wear mine crossdraw (or scout style - either one), I barely notice it's there.

It whittles tiny spoons and forks and things...

etc etc etc

Oooh wow, I lured the BK-2 Gallery of Awesomeness out of hiding. :)

The Scrap Yard has a couple nice knives in that range. The S5 and 511. I like res c handles alot, makes for a light knife and chop surprisingly well for their size.

Same great warranty as esee too.

I am in the same boat.

I have a fallkniven F1 and I love it but want something a little larger.

I was thinking of the ESEE 6, the Fallkniven S1 or A1, maybe the becker 5, bark river bravo 1 (a little on the short side though...)
Lots of other makers but these are the first to mind. Not sure what else might be in that category.
Oh I was also thinking about the zero tolerance 0170 Not sure about the 14C28N stainless steel though.

Dont want cold steel, sog has nothing interested in either.

I would say go to Scrap Yard Knives and look at their SYKCO 511 that is available right now . Great price , unconditional lifetime warrantee , excellent customer service . And the 511 is made out of the same SR-101 steel as the Swamp Rat Ratmandu . You can't go wrong .

HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS !

Thanks for all the input. I think the Fallkniven S1 is leading the pack by some distance right at the moment. I'm also having to lean towards what I can readily get here in Australia. I do like the Bark River Bravo 1 but suspect it is a little small for what I want as eyeeatingfish suggests. However with the new Becker 'Tweeners' being unveiled at SHOT next week I may wait as the BK-16 does look rather tasty and I'm a couple of weeks out from being able to splash the cash anyway.

Glad this has helped out others looking to answer the same questions as well.

The S1 really is a great choice in that size and price range. Plenty of blade for most tasks, good steel, takes and holds a killer edge, comfy handle and compact when in its sheath.

If you decide to go with Fallkniven, you will not regret it. Ive got both the F1 and A1 and they are truly excellent knives.

Bark river also has the Bravo 2 but it isa 7 inch knife.

I think the zero tolerance0170 is nice but i also think some of the length is taken up by the handle comming forward.
I suppose that i could take off the handle and cut it.

I see that not too many people are big fans of Entrek knives. I believe that the knife the o.p. is looking for may be the Entrek Bravo 11.. Check it out. Got mine for Christmas, and aside from the sheath, I love the knife. 4.75 in. blade, 440c stainless steel 1/4 in. thick, 9 3/8 o.a. length. I haven't been able to really put it to the test, but today I started by making feather sticks, then battoned several pieces of wood (as big as my forearm) and I can still shave with it... Oh yeah, that's with the factory edge. Sorry I can't post pics but I did take some. Got mine for $133.... Cheaper than some, more than others... but a great knife none the less!

Another vote for the Ratmandu or Howling Rat. If you have small hands, you could get away with a SYCKO 511. Check out the GSO-5 and SURVIVE! Gear EDC4 as well.
