5 Items For SHTF

I hate these questions.

How is it that you can only take five things. I got so many items on my person that is for camping survival bushcraft what ever you want to call it for situations just like this as I sit here writing and watching the walking dead.

I would have to strip down to even comply.

Not going to do it lol.

Bryan

Agreed, I'm sitting here at my desk in my pajamas and already have four items on my person I wouldn't want to part with, a fixed blade and 9mm laying on my desk, and a pack I'd grab on the way out the door. If I'm ever stuck with just five items it will be due to an odd twist of fate, and I'll deal with whatever I have at the time.

Ridiculous question. I would never "just" take five items, ever... I take that many to the bathroom when I use it. I have five items in my pocket right now and I'm sitting and typing.

My van would be loaded to the roof and I'd probably pull a trailer if I had to leave my home and believe me it will hold a lot of stuff. Abandon it.... no, someone would have to take it from me. It would become my new home.

Ok... Food, a 22 Mag rifle with ammo, Blackjack 125 knife, Vic SAK, fuel.

One of the best posts I've ever read. I don't even remember the last time I was completely gearless. Hell it's such a matter of muscle memory at this point even when I get out of bed in the middle of the night to use the bathroom I have more than just five items while half asleep and sitting on the commode. I suppose that comes from twenty years of being surrounded by nuclear power plants (and idiots)...and having worked at more than one of them.

My browning tactical axe ( sharp enough to use as a knife but has the power to chop down trees.
Kelty 0 degree sleeping bag
Ruger 10/22
Stainless steel water bottle
My girlfriend ( another person that can help with hunting, shelter building, fire making and other tasks, as well as keep me mentally sane :) )

Knife
Pot
Water container
Fire
.22

I'd really want to carry a tarp, too, though.... and some cord.... and some food... and hatchet/axe... and a saw, etc

-Zombie-proof bunker
-a replicator from star trek
-Kate Upton
-Kaley Cuoco
-A battalion of eunuchs with their own supplies to guard the place.

Seems as likely as society about to break down and being able to hit the pause button but only select five items.

All purpose cleaner
Bleach
Mop
Sponge
A new fan

Then I'd go out and find the !#%@#%$ bastard that threw sh#t at my fan

Wow. Hard to respond. I live in a suburb and work in the "downtown" office. My keychain has 1) Vic Rambler, 2) BSA firesteel, 3) peanut lighter, 4) p38 can opener, 5) arc aaa light, 6) tiny aluminum tube whistle, 7) mini (micro?) eyeglass screwdriver. This is without adding any of my usual EDC pocket stuff, much less a work bag with water bottle, rain jacket / mini umbrella , ham ht, spare batteries for lights, phone, etc. etc.... or outdoor kit. None of this takes up very much space / weight.

Cool question as it is always neat to see what people rate as most important.

It would be nice to have any machete at all, which I would consider a luxury. If I didn't have that, I'd find or make something similar. With a knife, axe or machete I can make all the other essentials. Basically, I don't really need to start with anything except the clothes on my back. Here's something I wouldn't want with me: women and children.

I think „SHTF situation“ is not enough information. What kind of shit is it? :D Flood catastrophy, war scenario, zombie apocalypse, epidemic plague, etc etc.
My five items would greatly vary depending on the kind of scenario!

ll.

SHTF means I have to bug out to the woods, in my opinion.

Therefore:

1. tarp
2. big stainless steel bottle
3. tons of paracord
4. fire steel
5. Fehrman Peacemaker

Here's something I wouldn't want with me: women and children.

As a husband and father of a seven year old any serious thoughts on actual SHTF scenarios possible here conjure some unpleasant images. But my biggest fear is the SHTF while I am out of town away from them.

Mist I could not agree more. I travel 150K air miles a year and the cancelling of flights and natural disaters or 911 scenarios where eveything is grounded always has me thinking "how do I get home" Oh and the fun is I travel by air so I CAN"T crary a blade .

Poncho w/liner attached
550 cord
Large fixed blade w sharpening system And high quality sheath(Becker, camp tramp, randall ect) and mag/ferro
Guyot water bottle with wire bail
Firearm depending on what I can get my hands on first most likely a shorty carbine in 5.56 w/ .22 kit and appropriate ammo and suppressor (I can take all game in my area with a 5.56 maybe not ethically and a .22 kit adds tons of versatility)

I'll take this from another perspective; if I had to grab five things in my immediate reach, lunge or grasp, they would be:
1. Leatherman Wave
2. Poncho with liner
3. PSK
4. PFAK
5. 10X10 Blue Tarp

This assumes I am dressed and equipped for the day, which means I already have a great deal of stuff with me.

I would only need to grab two items:

1st item:

My pack, which is ready to go, and includes;
- Bark River Bushcrafter
- Trailblazer folding bucksaw
- Husqvarna hatchet
- fire kit
- canteen/cup
- first aid kit
- general repair kit (duct tape, zip ties, needle/thread, etc)
- sharpening kit
- water treatment
- 5' x 7' tarp
- wool hat, socks, etc.
- compass
- whistle
- signal mirror
- headlamp/spare batteries
- alcohol stove
- slingshot/ammo
- wire snares

2nd item:

- longbow and arrows

That's it. Two items.

I think one of my items would be a bag of toilet paper. Most of the other things I'd want to take have been mentioned already.

1. Pistol and ammo.
2. Toilet paper.
3. Bic lighter.
4. Leatherman.
5. Stainless pot.
