5 Must Have Folders

Personally (and Ill void my knife knut status by saying so,) Ive never been a huge 110 fan BUT totally see the value of the design, both historically and practically.

I guess my list would be like this

Vic something in color alox (blue farmer)
Spyderco Endura FFG (my current workhorse)
Benchmade 710 (Or one of thier lovely axis locks)
A Trapper style slipjoint (broad strokes)
UNIQUE (Everyone should own at least ONE folder that is totally just for themselves, Sebbie ,Microtech, Bradley, maybe even a true custom.)

Opinel 8 or 7
Vic Spartan or Tinker
Spyderco Endura 4
Kershaw Two Can
ZT 350

Delica 4 (perfect EDC)
Victorinox Farmer (Best multi tool knife IMO)
Buck 110, 112 or 55 (You gotta have a Buck, but I don't think everyone needs a 110, and a 55 might not be enough for everyone.
Al Mar SERE 2000 (The only folder I would take into Hell to stab the Devil himself)
Case Canoe (My favorite traditional)

The Opinel is a good pick. So is the Sebenza. I wish I could afford the latter. The Buck does seem a little obligatory, but I can't seem to justify keeping it off the list. I'm returning my Para 2. I just couldn't get into it.

My top 5:
1- Buck 110
2- Spyderco Military
3- Leatherman Charge
4- SOG Flash II
5- Buck Rush

Not saying these are must haves for everyone but these are the ones I own and will not part with, mainly because I am unable to buy them again or even buy equivelants.

no order

sebenza
military
griptilian
victornox of your choice ( clasic, tinker, farmer are my fav's)
leatherman wave

Victorinox and Leatherman are manufacturers and Sebenza is a line of knives.

I think we all get his point. I do, at least. Some sort of standard, most likely red, Victorinox "Swiss army knife" - small or large. Some sort of Leatherman - probably the "standard" one that made them so famous. I think the current equivalent is something like the Wave, although I admit I haven't kept up on Leatherman's in a long time. And a Sebenza is a Sebenza. A Regular, 21, or even the new 25. Small or Large, but probably Large. What it has on the scales, the kind of blade, and how many thumb studs it has is probably irrelevant.

My personal must have 5 folders of blades I already own or what I would fill the gaps in with if I had to have only 5 are:

Large Micarta Insingo Sebenza
Para 2
ZT 0560 (or actual XM-18/XM-24 if price/availability was no issue)
Les George VECP
Maybe an Umnumzaan or Strider CC SNG

But actually, I agree a lot with the OP's top 5 if we're just talking about 5 folders that EVERY knife collection SHOULD have (although all mine has is a Seb, PM2's, 110, and a couple Leatherman's that I can't find. Although I'm sure I have a few Victorinox's somewhere too).

Buck 110
Victrinox
Spyderco Paramilitary
Sebenza
Leatherman

I'd like to hear how you came up with this list, and your reasoning behind each one.

Buck 110, I agree is a musthave for all collectors, as it was pivotal in the history of folding knives in America. Owning one helps us see where the industry has come from and where it is going.

I'd argue similarly for the Victorinox.

Sebenza, PM2, I have neither and have no desire to own one right now. I'd have a hard time arguing why someone should have one other than "it is popular right now".

Leatherman..useful tools, but why should everyone have one as opposed to SOG, Gerber, or anyone else who makes these?

My 2 cents on the matter:
The Para2 is the kind of thing that you really need to own and use to understand why. It's hard to put into words something that must simply be experienced. It's a lot of things, but a fad or fashion knife it is not. Tere has been a ton of R&D put into every aspect of that knife, the quality and materials vs pricepoint is excellent.

Th Sebenza, while not in everyone's budget has been a staple piece for high quality and consistent manufacturing. So much so, that it has won countless awards from the industry for this alone. It isn't for everyone, but for many, it's an excellent knife. As an aside, Chris Reeve gave us the RIL or "framelock". It's nice to know where it originated.

Leatherman is a great company that proivdes one of the best multitools in the entire industry. While Gerber and SOG are also good contenders,a the overall quality in a Leatherman is something on a whole different level, while remaining made in the US (that is important to many).
