5 Must Have Folders

Umnumzaan
Small sebenza
Burger EXK
Benchmade mini grip
Leatherman skeletool

At the end of the day these are just my opinions based on a few years of collecting and learning on this forum. Although I don't own a Buck 110 or Sebenza my first lockback was a Puma270,which I still have, I also own a high end frame lock, a Yuna. As for the multi-tools there are many good brands but Leatherman was the first. As I said earlier this is just my opinion, and a bit of fun. If a newbie came to you and said 'I want to start a collection, Which 5 knives do you think would best represent the last 30 years of locking folders? There are a million answers, what would yours be?

Hmmm...

Well, I've just recently gotten back into collecting (not even two months ago), so I only have 10 currently.

But, of those 10 I'd say, in order:

1. Spyderco Manix 2
2. Spyderco Ambitious
3. Buck Tempest
4. Schrade Bear Paw
5. Kershaw Chive

But, in all honesty, I think the first two are the only true "must own" knives.

My pics will just include the pretty affordable.
1. BM 556 Mini-Grip.
2. Spyderco Endura.
3. Kershaw Leek.
4. Either the "new" or previous Cold Steel Voyagers.
5. Case medium Stockman.
I know...no surprises here.

I've noticed that most of you mentioned the Victorinox SAK. Any particular reason Wenger doesn't come recommended as much?

Mmmm, well Victorinox owns Wenger (but they're like allowed to do their own thing), so that could be the reason why. Also, I remember glancing over something someone posted a few days earlier on how Victorinox had better marketing than Wenger back in the day.

Spyderco Delica......The Delica is the modern 110, modern technology at it's best, thumb hole, pocket clip, super steels.

I really really like this comparison.

Large or small Sebenza
Ritter grip with custom scales (somewhat low cost for a near custom feel plus the advantages of the Axis lock)
Large Becker (BK9/BK5/BK7)
Case SBJ CV
High quality chef's knife for the kitchen (custom, Carter Murray, or one of the great Japanese high end production knives)

In production knives...

Regular Sebenza (large and/or small)
Classic micarta Sebenza (large and/or small)
Spyderco Military
Spyderco Para 2
Case Trapper

Very, very hard to stop at 5. This should have been 10, lol.

In no order:

-Spyderco Military, Para-military or Police (3 different locks)-Slicers-
-CRK: Large or small Sebenza (-preferred- or other CRK) -Slicers-
-Strider: SMF (big), SnG (med), Sj75 (med-small slicer) - BAD A$$! -overbuilt folder-
-Emerson (Awesome ergos!)
-Hinderer (XM18 or 24) -Perfection in several flavors -overbuilt folder-

The Buck mayo TNT, I have the carbon fiber version weighing in at 2.2 ounces with a blade a little longer than 3 inches its an excellent EDC/gentlemans folder. Light, thin and a perfect sized blade. Only problem is, is that it's not easy to get a hold of!

Here's my list!

Buck mayo TNT
Spyderco Delica
Chris Reeves Sebenza
Strider SNG
Benchmade AFCK
Kershaw skyline

lol, I just realized that it's 6.

Well said. Too many are quick to flame because someone asks a question on a DISCUSSION forum... sheesh

Nobody flamed anyone.

I just wasn't sure how one could say something was a "must have" when they themselves didn't own it.

What if they bought it on reputation and ended up not being pleased with it?

Maybe not flamed sorry, but IMO answer the question or move on to the next thread... No need to dissect the OP's reasoning.

In no particular order:
-Spyderco Manix 2, a solid knife, available in multiple "manlyness" levels :)
-Spyderco Para Military 2, light, quick deployment, great slicer. A great medium-size EDC.
-Benchmade 710, understated nearly 4" blade. AXIS lock rocks and slim/light carry.
-Benchmade 940, my first decent knife. Will always have a place in my heart. Nice EDC, but handle a bit small for large hands.
-CRK Sebenza /w Insingo blade, a good size blade that's very well made and doesn't scream "mall ninja."

Having owned blades from about $40 to $400, I can see things I really like at most price levels. In some ways, I enjoy the cheaper blades more. It's not difficult to get or at least expect perfection when paying the big bucks. It's when you can get a great blade for more affordable prices, that's when I'm impressed. If it's made in the USA, then huge bonus in my book!

Agreed.

That's why the Ambitious really took me by surprise. Figured it'd just be another run-of-the-mill cheap Chinese knife.

The ergonomics on that one are beyond description. Of course, it would likely vary according to hand size.

para 2
