5 to to survive the first 5

Man that depends, on injury, entrapment, vehicle location etc.....

Id say that gainin access to the pt is priority, so An axe/ prybar would be great for this. Flashlight to see what youre dealin with as far as injuries. Ems shears, as I can make whatever kind of bandage/ tourn. I need with these. Wire cutters/pliers to cut battery cables to the car, emergency blanket to keep pts body temp regulated, and to keep the pt shielded from glass, and other debrie while extricating. ABCs are top priority, as long as they are breathing, and bleeding is controlled best thing to do would just stabilize c-spine after that. If I had to choose 5 for this situation, those are my picks.

JW, have you ever thought of EMS work ??? :D All spoken like a true paramedic. The LEO in me says, secure the scene and call for JW ( or other EMS)!!!! LOL

1) Flashlight
2) Fire Extinguisher
3) Prybar
4) Leather Gloves
5) blanket

gloves
safety glasses
solid boots
flashlight (preferably Ex rated)
bandanna

Never mind anyone else, if I don't survive the first 5 min to get back to my pack I'm no good to anyone else

The article was written with the idea that you are going down a dark road at night and stumble upon a bad car accident. What would help you do the most good in your first five minutes on the scene before EMS arrives.

In that case...
flashlight
gloves (nitrile works)
shears
res-q-me
water

Halligan bar or Jaws of Life.
Fire extinguisher
Reflective safety vest
Road flares
Nomex fire gloves

Well, stuff I actually carry in my car:

1.) First Aid kit (rather extensive, has the gloves, mask, quikclot, etc others mention as separate items)
2.) Flashlight
3.) Crowbar
4.) Fire Extinguisher
5.) Couple gallons of water

I carry a vehicle FAK, flashlight, flares, and a cell phone. I'm not cutting anyone out of anything, or moving someone out of a non burning rig. I can put on a tourniquet if a limb is gone, and have some Quick Clot in my FAK, but major stuff is not for me to do.

No good deed goes unpunished.

I had a lady in front of my once, rear ended a delivery truck hard, broke it's axle. She was cut up and bruised. No one would stop, she had a kid in a car seat, I threw out four flares, got traffic around the wreck, and called 911.

NO ONE else stopped.

Thats' the society we live in now.
