5 year old Sebenza compared to new, detent and reblade question.

Little back story. For christmas 2020, I bought myself a Sebenza 31 in S35VN after wanting one since I was about 14 and discovered someone made a true left handed knife. I carried that sebenza off and on for quite a while, through my undergrad, at an aluminum plant, industrial fire brigade school, confined space rescue training, and in the office. Initially, I treated it like a baby but after a few years it became a solid user. Its been sharpened a bunch, from use and because my keys always seemed to dull the base of the blade. Its on its third clip and is in need of a fourth. I figured it was time to get a new one.20260607_191538.jpg20260607_191607.jpg

I was thinking of getting it rebladed, how does that process normally go? It looks like it takes a year or two?

Also, I noticed the detent is way smoother on this new model, does anyone know if they changed the blade positioning? My new one does not seat as deep in the handle as my old one and the detent is much lighter because of it. Nothing unsafe, but on the old one, the lock arm rests on the blade when closed, while the detent ball is still visible on the new one. Ill get some photos tonight to show what I mean. Just curious if this is normal.

Thanks!

I'd start by putting your keys elsewhere.

For a reblade, you message CRK and they put you in a queue. Usually 9-12 months. When they're ready to put your blade in production, they contact you to send in the full knife. Takes a little longer than a spa trip. And they give you the old blade back too, unless something has happened to make it unsafe.

Here is how the detent rests at closed on the new vs the old20260609_204313.jpg20260609_204324.jpg

Along with where the tips sit. The old is online with the point where to two angles intersection while the new sits higher20260609_204450.jpg20260609_204455.jpg

Thanks! I'll have to get in touch with them.

I'm too habituated to carrying my keys in my front left pocket where my knife goes that I've just grown to delay with it. It only seems to lightly dull a small part, unless a key gets lodged in there some how, ut the newer magnacut blade seems to resist the key impact much better.

Yeah, contact CRK for a timeline for a reblade. I would guess the difference between the two is either the detent ball or the detent hole being different. Maybe that’s what is contributing to the blade depth. The ones I looked at that I have are about the same as the older one as to where the blade sits when closed. My newest is like yours where the lock bar is noticeably away from blade. I’ve got a couple of 31 Damascus blades that look like the older one where the lock bar is against the blade. The 21’s I have are like that also.
Did the pocket clip on the older 31 come like that where it’s resting on the lock bar only. I thought it was angled when the 31 came out. I don’t know if the tension from the pocket clip is adding to the lock bar.
I carry mine in a pocket sheath, at first it was awkward, but now it’s second nature to take it out of the sheath. It definitely saves on the other stuff in my pocket from scratching the slabs.

Thanks! Yeah I was looking closely at it and it looks like tue detent hole is in the same spot, but i think the spot pin is slightly larger causing the blade to not seat as deep and the detetn isnt dropping into the hole as much. Without the clip it is the same way. I'm wondering if crk tried to get the blade a little.bit further away from the back of the handle and this was a solution without having to retool the machines, sightly increase the stop pin diameter. With how close the edge is to the back of the handle, i could see someone with a meaty hand getting cut if they pushed hard down the back. Back when my 2020 31 was new if I pushed my finger hard against the back I could just barely feel the edge.

In regards to the clip, yes it should be angled. I think this is the second or third clip i've had on this knife. I caught it on the leg strap on a fall protection harness during a training class and it bent it way out of whack. You can see the scratch against the frame where it dragged.

Honestly, I don't mind the scratches that much. I like to see the knife evolve and wear over its lifespan. The dulling issue is a minor annoyance, but it mainly depends on the pants pockets and where the keys sit.

Yeah, I’ve had a couple 21’s and an Umnumzaan rebladed. Never took more than a month.
Oh sweet! I just got a order placed for a new 31 blade. Current eta is 9-12 months, maybe it will be a bit faster, but if not, i've got another one to use in the mean time haha.

I've had a couple of reblades. One required a total wait time of about 14 months. The second reblade came with no wait time at all. They happened to have one ready when I placed the order. If you're interested in another blade shape, it might be worth asking about, as it could come with less wait time.

I also might suggest an edc key organizer, such as a keybar or the like. Might stop your keys from intruding between the handle scales.
I've thought about that in the past, but crk is the only knife brand I've ever ran into to that problem with. The edge is so close to the back of the handle, it just doesnt leave much room to keep stuff from contacting the edge. I haven't ran into the issue with open back spyderco or benchmades back when I used those brands a lot, or with hinderer.

I've noticed the magnacut in my new sebenza seems to really hold up better than the s35vn. Very minor rolling from a key hitting the edge compared to before. And in all honesty, it really only makes a 3/16 to 1/4 of a dull spot that catches paper, its not like the knife is too dull to use, there is still about three inches of edge to work with. When I was younger, I was too picky and had to have the edge perfect, so I would over sharpen the edge to get the dull spot out.
