Maybe not as good of a find as Stacy got at the salvage yard, but. . . A neighbor had a garage sale today and I found a piece of ironwood there. I think with careful cutting I can get either 3 or 5 handles from it! I won't know until I cut it open.

that is really awesome! damn, now I'm going to have to be on the lookout for things like that at yardsales and stuff!

That's nothing...I look for furniture at yard sales that I can cut up. :)

Nice little score there, Zaph.

Poor turtle.....:eek::D

Looking forward to seeing what grain patterns you get.

I have purchased many carvings made with Iron Wood and they always end up on the shelf. Some are almost at nicely done as that turtle, someone did a great job on it.
Feel a little guilty yet?

I hate to tell you bud, but that is a sea turtle......I hope you can live with yourself if you cut it up....not an endangered species, but certainly a threatened one.

Sweet find. I have a Ram, asian man and a quail in ironwood that I got from a thrift shop. Can't beat the price.

Nice looking turtle carving , I would keep it as is and search the world for a ironwood tree.

Cut that thing up. What are you going to do with that turtle otherwise, just look at it?
I'd rather look at the beautiful scales that it made for my knife.

When I visited AZ for work, I was looking for carvings just like this as a source of ironwood...Then I tripped over 600lbs of logs a guy had for sale instead.

Cut it up! Keep a Mexican carver in a job! :)

I've been on the hunt for deals like that too. The other day I found four "plates" made of Monkey Pod wood from Hawaii. Snapped them all up and turned one into scales already.

I recently took an order for a set of three Desert Ironwood hunters for three best buddies. They wanted them to be pretty much identical damascus hunters They supplied me with a sea turtle carving they had brought back from Mexico that was virtually identical to yours. This would make for three matching handles.

After sawing the turtle into scales, I removed my respirator to be greeted to the sweet smell of cotton-candy. Desert Ironwood smells like roadkill. The carving was cocobolo or another rosewood variety.

In every way the carving appeared to be Desert Ironwood. We were let down a bit to be sure. All other Mexican carvings that I've transormed into knife handles have always been the real thing. This one was a rip-off.

Cheers,

TV
