They'd say "wellll... if you're willing to pay just a little more, you could get a Spyderco PM2".

Or a Smatchet.

Or they'd ignore the dollar limit and tell you all about the Sebenza.

No, I'm not salty, at all. But, could I ask you to remove yourself from my lawn?
A Smatchet would be sweet! Particularly if you found a WWII example for a few bucks at a garage sale which needed nothing more than an afternoon of TLC...

Thanks for the suggestions. The first is a flipper, and I can't stand flippers, the second has thumb studs, and I can't stand thumb studs. Both have sharpening choils. I can't stand sharpening choils. Neither one has a handle shape I care for either. And tip up only! Wow, no.

Obviously my suggestion of the Tenacious (and Resilience) is predicated on someone who shares preferences similar to my own. Full length cutting edge, handle that lets you get your hand right up next to it for maximum cutting leverage, opening hole and liner lock for the most hassle free deployment of any knives I've experienced as well as more than strong enough. the option of tip down carry, comfortable and neutral handle shape that fits perfectly in my hand.... And I'm sure I'm not the only one who desires at least one, if not all these features, and for whom the Tenacious nails them. So I get that your preferences are not the same as mine, and I will read your statements about the Tenacious in that light, and reiterate that for me the design is close to perfect, and I have yet to see another knife in that size and price range that I would rather own, carry, or use.

I like Spyderco but the Tenacious got an honorable mention from me in the "worst deals" thread. Given the current market, 8Cr13Mov is getting hard to justify at half that price. Sandvik steels, Acuto 440, AUS-10, 9Cr18Mov, and Chinese D2 are all becoming more affordable. Some of those steels are now available in decent knives under $30! The performance gap between 8Cr13Mov and all of those steels is notable.

When 8Cr13Mov first began to dominate the budget market, I remember being happy about it. The budget market back then was populated by steels like 420, 440A, and AUS-6. When companies like Kershaw made 8Cr13Mov a mainstay, it was a welcome alternative. It was almost as good as AUS-8, which has now also been surpassed by those other budget steels. I think it's a shame that Kershaw, CRKT, Spyderco, and others have remained stubborn on upgrading.

In the $50-100 range, Spyderco's VG-10 is a lot more compelling. Sure, it faces a similar problem as Spyderco's prices have gone up and the competition has continued to innovate. Unlike 8Cr13Mov though, I consider VG-10 a decent everyday steel. While arguably overpriced at $70, the Wharncliffe Dragonfly is still one of my favorite knives. Taking a quick look on BladeHQ, Spyderco also has knives in N690, BD1N, and even S30V within this price range.

I'm not going to stop liking or carrying it guys. But I will be grabbing a Resilience in S35VN once they come out, if I have the cash on hand.

I don't buy many sub $100 knives, but Civivi is killing it IMO. Might have to pick up a third. Carrying my CF/Damascus Exarch front flipper today.

Hey is the artisan cutlery mini proponent still for sale?

Hey is the artisan cutlery mini proponent still for sale?

Their website says it is. Just the D2 black blade/black G10 version, though. I only checked Artisan's home site. Some of these companies discontinue models pretty quick, so if it's still on their site, it's a safe bet you'll be able to find them through other dealers, too.

Hands down its gotta be a Spyderco Delica 4. You can get it in about any steel you want for around $100. Best all around knife ever made.

Yeah. I would suggest the vision. As a knife that would tick most edc boxes.

Wharncliffes are good utility knives. Good for the clam shell packaging.
The angle makes it an OK food prep knife.
And is quick and locked up enough as a defensive knife.
