$50 chopper/camp knife

Here's an option - Get a Fiskars/Gerber brushhook and mod it like this:

Those are being sold locally at Walmart with the Fiskars brand and color scheme for a very reasonable $20. Really useful around the yard. Never really thought about modding one. Has potential in that dept.

I would go with the suggestion for a 12" machete and a good smaller knife. I like the Cold Steel ones because they are inexpensive and tough. And they come in at least half a dozen flavors, so you can pick the shape you like best. I personally like the Barong. My other machete that I use a lot is a Susuwat from the Philipines. I have no idea what it is made out of, but it holds a wicked edge, and is light enough to use for several hours, and heavy enough to chop through brush. It is a hand-made piece, but it was about $20+shipping on ebay. I think the guy who sold it is still there. His store is moro swords or moro knives, or something like that. I have gotten a few different pieces from him over the years, and been pretty happy with them.

I bought a Kabar Cutlass Machete ($45) a couple of months ago to chop down and branch some 4-5" 20 foot elm trees. Man is this thing a workhorse! Next time I go camping, I'm taking this and my Alox SAK Farmer as my small knife.

I also think the Kabar Large Bowie or the Kabar Camp Knife would be good bets although I don't own them. Good luck with your choice, there sure are a lot of good suggestions here.

I can also recommend Kabar in this price range. The machete is my favorite camp tool, and they come with pretty nice sheaths.

everyone on this site has eaten, driven, bought, stolen, crapped something outsourced. so stop boo hooing like some hippy who claims to only eat organic. its BS

As one of the other posters mentioned, Kabar Camp Knife made in the USA and well made.

I use one in the Aussie Bush and have found it great for the money.

Wait a week and buy the soon-to-be re-released Kabar Becker BK9. It will be a bit more than $50. The Camillus-made BK9 was highly regarded.

Try a bolo from Reflections of Asia. They're not pretty but honest, village grade workers for $30 shipped. I have the Batangas bolo (15" pointy blade) and the Ilocos curved tip (heavy 12" blade). May be bigger/ heavier than you're looking to carry but the Ilocos is a real beast. It can chop side by side with my big WWII khuk from HI.

+1!! I love mine. Chops and cuts like a champ. Very attractive price too. I also second the new ka bar beckers. I can't wait to pick up a bk7 when they start shiping out

I took Andrew's idea and went a little different dirrection with it. I wanted a tip that I could potentially skin with, and left the longer handle for more power. I made a sheath from a thin mud guard I had on hand. I camo'd everything, and then did a cord wrap, adding a bunch of super glue ( per email info from Andrew) in multiple passes along the leng of the handle after the wrap was done. Also super glued the ends to about 5 wraps back. That should hold it! I doubled up the cord on the end of the handle to give a more positive stop for my hand. I've tested it, what a beast. The paint will wear off the coated blade, and sheath, but these type of handles hold the krylon well. It still works with the factory holder as well. The second one will get the blade cut/ sharpened in the same fasion when I get the chance. I will initially leave it the factory colors and add a black cord wrap for better grip.
