A friend of mine has field dressed a deer with a two blade folder he picked up at ACE Hardware . . .I'll bet it was well under $50 back in 1997.

Said he really wished that he hadn't lost his "deer knife" somewhere in the snow.

A Buck 110 is an old favorite. My daughter just used one last night on a hog her and her friends caught with dogs. She used a Ka-Bar Dogshead to dispatch, a Mora Kansbol to gut, and the 110 to skin and quarter.

The two boys with her were fighting over the Buck.

Ahti Metsa stainless Sandvik 12C27 rat tail tang peened through birch handles and capped, extremely sharp and durable, don't quote me but I think mora does Ahtis heat treat

I used my ahti knife on stuff I shouldn't, dead wood, seasoned hardened wood, even my genuine Irish blackthorn shaft, no visible damage and still sharp, I swear by these knives
Only thing is the metza is 60 I believe

As a side note, a Buck 110 is a really great gift.

You would be surprised (well maybe not too surprised) on how many young folks don't have a good knife and who yearn to be taken and shown the outdoors.

In a world full of video games and iPhones, a Buck knife will last far longer and create quality memories and real adventures.

Manly patriot in D2. It is 40 bucks with a kydex where I live. I didn't process a deer, but two large pumpkins with it, and the performance and handling was outstanding. Shaving bevor and afterwards. In fact too good, my daughter watched me during the pumpkin carving and now it is her knife and I gotta buy a new one for myself soon. Lost just too many knives this way over the years...

*edit* oh and great fan of the Buck 110 myself, but I never warmed up with the idea to use a folder for animals when I can use a fixed blade.

Not my "thing" but some good reviews of the Ruike Hornet in the UK, 14c28n Sandvik which Ruike seem to do a good job with.

Just about any knife will work. Deer are not hard animals to skin and process. You might need to sharpen it after each deer though. I have a Buck 105 that was given to me by a coworker. I bought a Cold Steel Pendleton Lite which cost about $20USD. Either of these will be my choice.

I think it's important to remember the fact that it's called the 110 Folding Hunter, and not the 110 Biker Knife, or Construction Knife, or Box Knife, or whatever. Nope, says it right on the box, 'Folding Hunter.' The 110 has probably processed more game than any other knife made in the last 75 or 100 years. Specifically because it's very good at the job. But, some people don't like to use a folder on game. And for them, there is the model 101. A fixed blade 110. I have both a 110 and a 101 in oak and 5160, fwiw.

But, in the OPs position, I'd look for a Cold Steel Drop Forged Hunter. One solid piece of 52100 bearing steel. Can be found for less than $50.

I prefer drop point for dressing deer (don’t like gut hooks), but honestly it doesn’t take much blade to dress deer. Any 3-4” blade will work. Find what appeals to you and decide fixed or folder and go from there. I love my custom hunting knives but would feel fine dressing a deer with a Rat II. Just my .02
