Looking for a general purpose fixed blade for light cutting chores / camping. Would like a 4-6" plain edged (no serrations) blade, and a simple drop point or bowie design (though I'm open to other designs if it's a better knife for the price). Suggestions are much appreciated - just please keep it under the limit! :p

Look at Mora knives, they are high quality and very inexpensive. Many people in the wilderness forum swear by them.
Frosts Mora? Swedish? I think I actually have one of those around... my dad and I each bought one from a fishing store when we went up north for the salmon run. It's held up pretty well, but it strikes me more as a fillet/fishing knife than a general purpose knife... the blade, although easy to sharpen, doesn't hold an edge as well as I'd like it to.

If you shop around you could probably find a Buck Vanguard for around $50.00. It is a very practical design:

Hmm... it looks pretty nice. I'll keep an eye out

Not tried them myself yet (my next purchase) but I hear nothing but good things about Condor Knife & Tool ! Check this out ! -

Ask JoeZilla on the Wildernass & Survival Skills section !

Ooo - neat design. The length of the swedge compared to the blade strikes me as a bit odd though...

I'd recommend the Becker BK-2 Campanion but it is $64. ;) :p

I can tell you some others that I was considering though that were under $50 like the Benchmade Rant and KaBar Short Fighting/Utility.

Or maybe the good ol' Buck 119 Special...

Look at the Buck Nighthawk. After seeing the destruction test results from knifetests.com, I bought one. Not really a chopper, but good for general tasks and fairly inexpensive.

In that price range - Ontario Marine Combat, Buck 119, Buck Nighthawk, Benchmade Rant DPT, Mora 2000, Ontario Knife Company Navy Mark I.

I'm really liking the look of the KaBar Short Fighting/Utility and it looks right around my price range ($42+shipping). Do you personally own the knife? Can you give me some input?

its a combat knife no way around it, it will work for what you have in mind but it has a skinny, long and thin blade with a sharp but weak point, many people swear that the ka-bars are amazing camp knives but IMO its worth the money for a BK-2 at NGK they can be had for 58+shipping

I think you might be surprised how small it actually is. My buddy has it and it is a but I do like it as long as no heady chopping is needed.

The KaBar Short is quite skinny and its proportions are the same as the larger KaBars so in the pictures it really doen't look that small.

I agree that for $9 more, the Becker BK-2 is worth it. Actually, I did buy mine from
KB-Becker-Campanion-BK2
but I forgot I did and paid $58 for it even though I posted the Knifeworks price. :o I bought it with my ZT0300.

Just keep in mind that the Becker is a substantial hunk of 1095 CroVan steel at 1/4" thick so it will be heavy in a backpack. So if weight is an issue, go for the KaBar Short or the Buck 119 Special.

Well, Boker's affordable Magnum line has a few interesting items, and this one is now in promotion, it's probably nice if you like damascus:

- slim hunter damascus

I also like the look of the scandinavian style puuko

+1 on the rant.
I don't own one yet, but it's on my list.
seems like a very good knife for the money.

Take a look at the Buck Nighthawk. I've got a couple of those... they feel good in the hand, sharpen up nicely, hold an edge okay and can take a good beating to boot. At the $50.00 price point, they're pretty decent.

Queen offers some nice fixed blades in this price range. D2 steel, full tang, hardwood scales, leather sheath and USA made.
