>$50 Fixed Blade

As much as I love KABAR, the small fighting/utility knife is too small. the handle is very skinny.

For a few dollars over 50, you can get a Becker BK2, or a full size USMC KABAR.

For 35ish you can get a Becker BK11

For right at 50 you could get the Benchmade Rant DPT.

The Buck Nighthawk is also a winner.

I'd recommend the Becker BK-2 Campanion but it is $64. ;) :p

I know quite a few people are hot on the BK2, but honestly based on what the OP requested (a general purpose fixed blade for light cutting chores / camping) even ignoring price I could not recomend the BK2 to him. If you are looking for a heavy duty knive suitable for splitting hardwood logs or prying open ammo cans, the BK2 can't be beat. The knife is built like a tank though, IMO making it unessessarily thick and heavy for routine camping and cutting chores.

I think of the available knives in that catagory and price point, the Buck 119 is probably my choice.

Man I've been looking at reviews of the BK-2 and that thing is just a lovely hunk-o-steel! I agree that it's awesome bang for the buck and that if I were to only carrying one blade in a survival situation, the BK-2 would probably be it.

Personally, I just don't think that I would put the 1/4" thickness to good use - the only situations I can see the thickness coming in handy for is wood splitting and other heavy duty tasks. Ideally, I would be carrying an ax or kukri for those sort of situations, while my knife would be more for smaller/finer cutting chores like carving and food prep.

Haha - I started typing the above statement before I saw your post (went to prepare breakfast part way through typing). Glad to see someone shares my point of view :)

Yes, now don't get me wrong, the BK2 is a great blade at a great price, but it's a specialized knife. If you need a single-blade that can do everything is a survival situation (cut, chop, batton, pry, etc), its an excellent choice.

For general purpose camping chores, however, it's like buying a Humvee to run down to the corner for a newspaper. Serious overkill. ;)

as a few others have mentioned, i will have to recommend the buck 119 as well. can be had for 30-40 bucks, great knife

The Buck 119 still seems like a little much for a light camp knife by my reckoning. A 6 inch blade is a little long and you really don't need a full cross guard. I like the Pathfinder a bit better if you want a blade longer than 4 inches.

I would take a look in the makers' subforum. There are some very talented makers selling over there. You never know till you try.
