A buddy wants me to find him a cool $50 knife, because he likes the cool knives i've showed him.

I'll buy second-hand of course, to get him the most bang for the buck......to get him hooked...<bwaaaaaahahahahahaha.....>

So please give me your ideas

I'm leaning towards Spyderco....

Yup, Spyderco...Either a Delica or an Endura...Plain-edge...Stainless would be cool, but FRN will do in a pinch.:).

Maybe a Camillus EDC? Looks way more expensive than it is and also alot of knife too! Can get a new one for below $50

but if you want to see his jaw drop keep a lookout for Uncle Bills "blems" on the Himalayan Imports forum. Words do not do them justice.

Most folks that go into a knife store who don't know anything will buy a Kershaw Speedsafe because they are SO cool. Look at one of those!
Barring that I'd say CRKT, you got a lot of knife, a good selection, and good quality.
(I just had a talk with a knife store manager the other day)

i second the CRKT. recently got Point Guard, and it is bang for the buck for sure. For higher blade quality, you might want to try the latest Greg Lightfoot M1 in AUS8, even better!

I agree with the others who have mentioned the Delica and the Endura. As to the choice between SS and/or FRN, why don't you ask your friend which he likes better. That way you want be making assumptions as to his preference. Once you know what he wants start looking on eBay and certainly in the exchange forum right here on BFC. Good luck.

A Delica or a mini Griptillian.

The Delica is one of the best slicing/piercing tools I've ever used and Griptillians put axis-lock goodness into everyone's hands.

If you friend isn't about to enter the field of sharpening, a fully serrated Delica, Endura, or Cold Steel would be a good way to enter this hobby.

Spyderco Endura or Delica - Great for so many reasons.
Cold Steel Voyager - Easy to sharpen. Good knife.
Benchmade Griptillian - Good all around knife.

Any of these would do but, I would probably go with a Spyderco Endura.

Maybe you could show your friend some pics of the mentioned models and see what he thinks?

I recomend a Camillus EDC. It's one of the few knives I own that I come to appreciate more and more the longer I own it. Usually the newness of a knife wears off fairly quickly, but the EDC has been a standby for me for two years now.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned the Native yet.

RH,

I almost did. With new S30V Natives selling for just over $50 online, used ones may sell for less. I didn't recommend it, though, as I think the blade is too thick (compared to the Delica and Griptillian) and believe that future knifeknuts deserve flat-ground blades.

I don't own any Spydercos yet, but for $50 I'd buy an FRN Endura plain edge. VG10 and a proven design for $45 and change at www.newgraham.com

The cheapest I have found a full-size Griptilian is $54 plus shipping (although they can probably be had for a little less). A mini Griptilian might be a nice choice, but they are $54 at the site linked above.

The Camillus EDC is another nice choice if your friend likes frame locks. Also about $45 in 154CM.

my suggestion would be

bm mini-grip if you think he'll dig the axis lock, decent user 440c blade steel and solid construction.

s30v native if you think the newer steel will impress your friend more than the bm axis lock might. harder one for a newer knifeknut to sharpen though.

crkt and kershaw make great knives but for $50(ish) i dont think the mini-grip or native can be beat for quality and design. saying that aluminium scallions or a leek for $40(ish) are 'cool' knives for a good price.

let us know what he gets and how he likes it.
