I work part time in a lab and I have noticed that these are really cool containers. They are the perfect size for a bic lighter and a bit of tinder. I think that Hoodoo will know what I am talking about. They are clear plastic, and if you get the Corning brand have a bright orange lid that screws on. You could fit a lot of matches in one also.

We use them for all sorts of things but one of the things I've 'adapted' them to is for insect feeding chambers. I mount a piece of sponge under the lid, soak it in water to keep the tube moist, drill a couple of holes in the side for ventilation, and roll up some leaves and stuff an insect inside and let him/her feed.

But, these vials are big enough you can carry all sorts of goodies. Good way to carry small survival gear for instance (as you mentioned). Fill them up with 22s. You can carry your ice fishing bait in them as well. All kinds of things. Great containers.

If you are around anyone who does nitrogen analysis (in micro lots), they will get tin capsules the size of a pencil eraser. The white containers these capsules come in are about twice the size of a film container and are great for storing stuff in.

I get some pleasure from finding a relentlessly peaceful use for a combative looking knife.
