$50 total cost - best knife

Try for a Buck 110 and a 112 at the same time, might be a touch over 50 but not much. ahgar

Some were mentioned before, but...

BM Vex (G10, solid lockup, like the slight recurve)
BM Monochrome (all steel construction, solid framelock, like the spearpoint)
Spyderco Centofante series (light, thin, but solid--VG10 is awesome!)
Spyderco Native at Wallie world (easy to find, no S&H needed, cool spearpoint, S30V!!)
Boker Trance (Solid framelock, thin and small but easy carry/useful)
Boker Subcom (tiny framelock but so cool..., makes a good "second knife"...)

Go on Ebay and look for a nice older bone handled pocket knife. Maybe a nice trapper, stockman, jack knife, etc. You'd be amazed at what you could get in the $20 - $30 range.

I concur on the Walmart Spyderco Native in S30V, which BIL can order and have shipped free to his nearest Walmart. You should let him know whether you prefer plain edge, combo, or serrated blades. Also, the Byrd Cara Cara and the Endura are large knives that many find too big for EDC; I would recommend the Meadowlark and Delica instead. But my Native is my favorite.

I'll throw in a vote for a Kershaw Storm or Storm II. It's been my EDC since the day I got it! They're available in plain/ combo edge and there's a tanto model I just found out about too. Different models range from $30-$35 over at NewGraham. Great knife, great price. If you like Ken Onion's designs, check 'em out!

i'm open to all ideas, fixed/folder/whatever. i'm going to tell him plain edge for sure, and i'm working on a list from the recommendations in this thread. i'll email him links to newgraham.com and agrussel (i'm loving the looks of those for some reason, totally un-tactical and i'm loving it for a change). i'm also going to tell him about the awesome walmart deals, some lights, and maybe even some shoes if he doesn't want to get a knife.
keep the ideas coming, i love it. not only for this, but i'm going to get some of these for sure now.

The Blade-Tech Pro Hunter Lite can be found for $43 on line, ground shipping is probably 6 or 7 bucks, so that would fit the bill nicely. It's a really good knife, too.

Hey Unsub, where'd you find that Fenix combo? I've been looking at a Fenix; if they still have that combo, I'd like to look at it.

....black birchwood scales 420HC blade 44.99 @ SMKW
I have the rosewood scales on mine and its been my daily carry knife for months now, excellent knife and not too big either, nice size, excellent fit and finish.
