OK, lets see...
The Carson will hold its value the best for sure, and of course his folders are excellent.
JWS makes an incredible knife with a level of perfection and precision that frankly few custom makers can match, but, his knives for whatever reason just have never had the following Kits do. But, if youre a junkie for ultimate precision and F&F, JWS is da man...

I prefer Kit and Mike's designs though, which may account for their knives being more in demand than JWS. But i can say without reservation, JWS makes about the most flawless, precise folder out there.
If you get very lucky, you might find a Boguszewski Cobra flipper for close to your $500 price in the forums, but probably you'll have to add at least $100, maybe $200, and thats if you can even find one for sale. They are absolutely amazing in design, quality and workmanship, and many feel his actions are the smoothest out there, and they may just be, and, thats with BRONZE washers, not teflon.
To go in a very different direction, the Strider MARSOC knife is due out soon, its a large striped and colored SnG framelock with a 4" spearpoint blade, and while it may be relatively crude compared to a Carson or JWS, its still a pretty neat piece of work, assuming you get a properly made one.
Finally, any Obenauf will astound you with its smoothness and precision, but the problem is theyre too cheap for your question! You could almost get 2, well, a Lg and small for $550 or so. Mike is without a doubt biting at Kit's heels and a great value in custom knives. Kit taught Mike well, too well...
