501 in elk

I understand the concern about elk. I ordered a 110 nickel with elk and S30V steel this fall and was eagerly awaiting its arrival. After waiting four weeks I was disappointed very white, very little brown and one side much thicker than the other. I planned on this being my knew hunting knife, instead it sits at home on the desk and my 110 Ultimate hunter is at my side as it has been. I have not spoke with Buck CS yet. I sort of know what they will say. Just can’t believe that they would send out a $160 knife from their custom shop like that.

I'd just keep sending them back until they come up with a good one.

It's better for everybody if we all refuse to accept unsatisfactory knives at the higher price levels.

Went back to digging in my pile and I found what I was looking for. Early this year in my little city they put on the first ever gun show, I was working night shift so I was lucky to be able to show my appreciation by attending the show. It was small and not many folks were there, I think due to poor advertizing. Anyway, I found one guy with a big table full of knives he had a few Bucks, some new & some old. I found one plane factory issued stag 501. I haggled the price down a bit, as he was very price proud for the used knife.

Here are some photo's of the plane used 2000 year issued 501 bought at a gun show

OK now I'll post some photo's of another 2000 year issued factory 501 I found fishing in the bay. These two paired together shows a great view of the variance you may get with this natural material.

Good looking pair JB! “Proud” is a good word to use. I’ll have to remember that..

I could be wrong, but your first one is elk while the second is sambar. At least that’s how I would describe them.

I’m not sure which I like better, though I’m always partial to elk!

Hi MT_P,

Yes, there are a lot of sellers overly proud of the Buck knives they are bringing to the market these days. Don't get me wrong I have overpaid for some of my Buck knives when Emotion won out over common sense. However, stay in the game long enough and you will understand what a true real value should be. I will not overpay anymore as most of the knives I collect are not "rare" by a long stretch of the word! That said if you want a specific knife and it's overpriced, just wait it will come around again for what you are willing to pay. If not, you didn't need to add it to your pile anyway!

The 501 at the top looks like Sambar for sure, the box in the photo's goes with that knife. The plane looking bottom 501 sure looks more like Elk, it did not come with a box so I don't know for sure. Now the funny thing is I find no stag 501's in the 2000 year catalog. Also, not one 501 stag Special Order knife for 2000 that I can find listed anywhere either.
