501 in my hands

David, here is a couple of pics of the knife and sheath. Sorry for the bad pics, it was pouring rain and had a glare i couldn't get rid of in the house and a glare in about the only spot where I could get out of the rain outside

A fella sitting across from us at the Ducks Unlimited banquet Saturday night won a DU 501 in the general raffle. I forgot how nice these were and how handy the size was. I offered him the picture frame and box of shotgun shells that I won in trade for it, but he politely declined. Later, when I won a 12g O/U shotgun in another raffle he offered the Buck for trade for my new shotgun...

David Martin;

I have a 500 with scales and old script just like jec's. Do you know if the wood scales and old English script indicate 440c or 425M?

To the OP, yes I would return your 501 to Buck and have it centered. I have centered a few myself but would not recommend it to someone that may not be careful.

jec, I've not seen one of the drop in pouch sheaths for the 501. In 1981 Buck went to the laminate handle material on the 500 series. In 82 Buck went to 425M steel. In 84 the script stamp was changed to block lettering. Trouble is from the time of the laminate handle to the block stamp there's no way to tell the year. The blade shape on your 501 looks different than the blade shape of the earlier 501's. Thanks for the photo. DM

vba, the wood laminate handles and script stamp are not solid indicators of the steel type on this model during that time-frame. I would go by the blade shape, grind and cutting. DM

Do you think it is an original buck sheath, or could it be a custom sheath with the way the Buck letters are arranged?
The reason I bought it was because I was going to buy a new 501, checked around and found this one cheaper than a new one(that's about the way I collect, before I pick up a new, I see if I can find an old one in same price range). No box, but it doesn't look to have ever been carried or sharpened so I hate to carry an old one that had never been used so I've just put it up.

It is a sheath made for Buck. But your sheath was never sent out originally for that knife. DM

Man, I gotta tell you guys I've been using my 501 for about a week and I really like it! The size is perfect for everyday tasks and it dosen't scare folks like my 110 would while still having a heavy and solid feel. I'm really glad I pulled the trigger on this model. It is definitely a keeper.
