Can anyone tell me if the 501 was always furnished with a sheath? It seems to me that the earlier 501's did not come with a sheath, but I may be mistaken about this.

...Hi Tom...Esquires ( 501's ) were originally issued without a sheath, but an open top black leather sheath became available as an option in approximately 1979 and became standard issue the following year. In the 1982 catalog an open top custom shadow sheath in brown leather was shown as an option. It is about this time that the standard issue sheath was changed to one with a flap. Those 501's whether the older ones or the newer are great edc's...I toss one in my pocket almost all the time...
