501 Squire Belt Sheath Why?

Bought a Squire. I really like it. It came with a belt sheath. I really don't see me using it as the Squire seems like a pocket knife. I wear a 110 or a 112 on my belt when I'm gardening or woods walking. But the Squire seems small enough for pocket carry all the time. Does anyone use their Squire belt sheath?

Is it really that much handier than just fishing it out of your pocket?

In situations where I am happy to have the world know that I have a knife (like in the woods) I'd rather have a larger knife. To me the utility of a smaller pocket knife is augmented by not having to answer questions about why I have it.

Not wanting to argue, just wondering.

I'm not sure, I'm with you on that. I think Buck provides a sheath with all of the knives of that style?

I have 1 for my 500, I just store it in there when I'm not carrying it...

The 501 was one of my very first knives. I was a kid so the knife felt really big. I carried it in the sheath most of the time and that made me feel big. Sadly I lost that knife playing neighborhood football. No sheath, it slipped out of my pocket. Now I carry the 110 in a sheath everywhere. But I think it's cool they still offer the sheath with the 501. Give it a try for a few weeks. I would be interested to here back how you like it!

I never use mine, at least not for a 501 anyway. It's been pretty handy to keep a smaller flashlight in. When I clip an EDC flashlight in my pocket it always seems to get in the way. So I've used it, just not for the intended purpose...

I've used it from time to time. Depends on where I am going and what I'll be wearing. I feel like it gives the 501 a classier carry and the sheath won't nick up the blade/scales when riding in your pocket with loose change and keys.

I carried a couple of 501's for a long time. One was a plain micarta and the other elk. Neither one came with a sheath that I can recall. They were simply pocket knives.

IMO, it's pretty traditional for knives of this style. I have a Schrade 5OT (several, actually - very nice little knives) that are like bare head cousins to the 501 that also has a holster (that I don't use).

The 501 is probably among my most gifted knife, second only to small multi tools.

I found that the snap on the inside will booger up the handles, so the sheaths with snaps I glue a piece of felt or thin leather over the snap on the inside, problem solved I've done it to all my sheaths. Buck should do that I think! Butch

The older 110 sheaths had felt on the inside over the button . Yes I wish they would still do that.

Nice to have the option. I wish all knives came with a correct size belt sheath.

I stand by my original response to this thread but should have said had a sheath available.

I think Victorinox got it right. Knife comes without a sheath. But very nice sheaths are available to purchase separately. This way you don’t pay for something you don’t need.

I think the OP’s point was why does it get one when the others don’t. To my knowledge it is the only knife smaller than a 112 that comes with a sheath. It’s a mystery to me.

I wear a 110 or larger knife on my belt everywhere I go. Even the city.

To make it even more perplexing.

The description of the Squire on Bucks site says it is “similar in size to the 55.” The description of the 55 says it is a smaller version of Bucks famous 110 folding hunter.

Yet the Squire comes with a sheath and the 55 does not. Lol!

The poor 55 doesn’t even have a name!

Not everything has a reason.

The 55 and the 503 are the same size. Both are the perfect size for the front pocket. The 501 is bigger. In the front pocket it will inevitably work it's way sideways and display a visible lump in most jeans and pants. It is however the exact right size and shape for across the bottom of rear jeans pockets imo.

I've been using the 501 sheath lately. Wearing it at 2 'o'clock on the right side (right handed). It's been perfect for fishing. Easy to get to and no wet or dirty hands in the pockets. Also, perfect while driving. Easier to get to and put back than a pocket or even pocket clipped knife. Makes opening packages of gum or other eatable items on the road a cinch. I've come full circle back to the 501. Great knife! :)
