After many attempts to acquire a power hammer I finally brought this one home.
A coworker in the elevator trade, who lives just 30 miles away, was willing to part with it for only $800 dollars.
His father in law Mr. Wooten, studied under Bill Moran for a short time, built a full shop then passed away before realizing his dream of making knives.
It runs as is but will be getting a full rebuild.
If anyone shows interest I will do the rebuild as a WIP.

Thanks guys.
Salem, I was hoping you would see this. You were very excited for me when I thought I had the last one in the bag. However, money got tight and I had to let her go.
Have there been other Wip's? If so I'd rather not bore anyone to tears.

Hi Marc,
I've always loved the soul that goes into forging. The LG is something I've wanted for a long time.
As far as getting serious goes, time in the shop has been hard to come by but my love for this craft continues to grow.
As a side note, I love the work that's coming out of your shop buddy.

Sorry, could not figure out how to get email notifications when i get a PM, thus I just saw it. I just sent you the plans.

Eric, there's this one that I did-
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...-50-and-the-continued-rebuild.-Babbitt-Poured!

But, your hammer has a different clutch and probably different problems, so rebuilding yours online would no doubt add to the wealth of knowledge out there. I've seen some progress shots of other 50 builds here and there on line, but thoroughness is rare.

BTW I hope you can get some info here and there from my WIP.

Nice score Eric!!! :D :D :D

I agree with Don... at the going prices these days, $800 (even needing a rebuild) is damn near stealing it. A properly rebuilt, smooth running 50# LG is typically selling for $4-5k of late!!!

Not to put words in Salem's mouth (or anything for that matter :p) but blackening the shaft is akin to waxing or greasing a bedded tang. The acetylene soot is just a release agent. :)

I know many of us eat up WIP stuff involving equipment, especially hammers. If you're up for it, I'd love to see lots of pictures.

BTW- I cannot recommend Sid's video on Little Giant hammers enough. It's about $100 and is WELL WORTH IT!!! One of the best shop related videos I own (it's actually 2 discs)... very thorough, quality video, and Sid is great about explaining everything. :)

Thanks For posting Don and Nick.
Yes, $800 was a steal:thumbup:

Nick, I have the video's and they are awesome.
I'll post pics as often as possible.

Yep, Nick got it.
I agree, $800, 30 miles away, and in running shape adds up to a DEAL! Got mine for $500 and 30 miles away, but it was a basket case...

I agree, I rented that video and if I owned a LG hammer I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

Yep, the price of these hammers has gone up a bunch since I started messin with them! I know where there's a heck of a deal on a new style 100 in the middle of the country if anyone is lookin (not mine). PM me...
