Don't know if this has made it this way yet but there is this gentleman in Croatia making some pretty cool belt grinders off a makita platform. I talked to him. He sells the contact wheels on ebay and I got a quote for 2 idler wheels for a flat platen, a tracking wheel, and the drive wheel for the grinder for $150 shipped. Problem being they are all 50mm (1.9685 in) and I'm trying to find out if i can use 2x72 belts since its so close. His English isnt too strong and I couldn't really find out what he runs. What do yall think? Clearly its not set up to run a 72 in belt but that is all problems with dimension that i can fab up. Is 50mm wide enough to run a 2 inch belt?

That looks as if it would run 2x72 belts with little modification. Cool looking grinder. You could always put a full size electric motor in there later if you wanted... with a bit bigger drive wheel.

Croatia, huh? Is that a quote for just the four wheels, or the whole grinder? If just the wheels, pretty good deal if they are quality, if the whole grinder, great deal. You may be able to find someone closer than Croatia with the wheels at a similar price- Jose at Pheer grinders, for instance. Just sayin'.

...Unless you are in Croatia as well... heck, fill out your profile and stay a while, eh?

It's for the wheels alone. Here is a link to the seller. http://www.ebay.com/sch/cile159/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=25&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2654
What kind of modifications were you thinking? I'm pretty open to suggestions. Tired of profiling blades with rasps and working ebony by hand.

Thanks for the advice! I've been a member for a while but my old is lost to time. Was more of a lurker anyway. Been forging for about 6 years now but I've pretty much got the the point to where I'm dead ending in the things i want to do with steel with just an anvil/hammer and some rasps. Been working with metal for a long time. I build motorcycles and rock crawlers etc.

According to Pheer's website they are about 90 bucks for the idler wheels on their own so I think i'd come out on top. Gotta build this thing on a budget and with some forethought I should be able to upgrade pieces as money provides.

BTW... CRAZY active hamons on alot of your blades. Very nice. Weirder yet man. You look like you could be my brother.

What he means is NO modification would be needed. As is the belt will overhang each side .015"...which is pretty much exactly what you want.

Love how the tool rest attaches on his. Might work on somethign similar on mine now that Ive seen it.

Stacy's got it. I have a habit sometimes of slightly qualifying, rather than stating things outright.

Thanks for looking at my work, too. Good to know there are other crazy long haired hessian looking metal forging dudes out there.

As far as mods go, I was thinking that the wheelbase of the machine would be a little different with american belts... but looks like you knew that anyway. Carry on!
