5160 & Black Walnut Camp/utility w/SS bolsters

The dove tail bolsters add a nice touch of class. Good job on the finish of the walnut as well. I think everything about this knife goes well together for an overall great looking knife.

I'm late to this discussion, but would add that I've handled this knife and like everything about it. Paul is doing some fine work and is welcome in my shop anytime.

Cheers!
Mike

Gosh, that is a beautiful knife!

How long did it take? How many knives have you made? One at a time?

I hope those aren't inapropriate questions. I'm just a noob maker.

That is absolutely beautifull! I wish that I could afford to make an offer on it. I think that blade takes the prize for the best camp knife that I have ever seen. The lines are stunning. There are a lot of makers who's blades scream, "Hey, look at me!", but this one sits back and smiles because it knows that no-one can look away. Keep making knives, when I can afford it I'll buy something from you.

Guys, this is an older post that got bumped back up, but I really appreciate everyone's kind words and compliments just the same!

Grizz, I don't recall exactly since this was some time ago, but I tend to work slowly and this one took a while to make. I stopped keeping track of how many I had made, but it would have been under #15. I certainly don't find your questions inappropriate...feel free to let me know if you have any others.

Matt, the 'atta boys' most definitely feel good, but my primary hope in posting is for honest constructive criticism so that I may make improvements in my work. I find that when I stare at a knife for so long, it's difficult to be objective about both it's strengths and weaknesses.

Very nice photography too! I wonder if some less than perfect lighting would show other aspects of the grind and overall finish?

I must say, the first time that i saw this knife, I inhaled audibly. that is a beauty that I really appreciate. that is gorgeous. I am really seriously slobbering over here.

Photography is still on ongoing WIP for me, but thankfully it has gotten a lot better over time. I'm pretty sure most of these were taken with 'less than perfect lighting' ;)

That's quite a nice compliment, thegeek574; thank you very much for your kind words!

Thank you, Sir! I am amazed with this knife, and I don't amaze easily. :D I now know what to shoot for with knife #14. Would you mind terribly if I see how close I can come to a faint reproduction? This is not exactly a knife of my style, so it would be very challenging. I don't make one-at-a-time masterpieces such as this, but I love a good challenge.

Do you have training? Machinist or anything?

I'm a forger, with very little machine work, but I can think of a couple of ways to make the dovetails. I've never noticed them on another knife, and it's a bold move. I'm thinking it could take me close to a week, but I have the material. The sheath is not in my ballpark currently.

Somehow, you have captured many a heart with this knife. It has raw magnetism.

Justin and Erin, thank you for your nice feedback!

Wow, you guys are really making my day (week?) with all of this high praise! Grizz, dovetailing bolsters is a fairly common practice (I certainly didn't come up with it!) so by all means give it a try if you like the effect. I did mine on a disc grinder, but you should also be able to do it on a belt grinder too if that's what you have. You can Google or search the forum for tutorials that will show you the process, but basically you just set up your grinder table to the angle that you want, and grind both the bolsters and the scales to that same angle. And no, I didn't have any sort of background or prior experience to help me out in knife making unfortunately...I'm just a recovering desk jockey with probably too much of a stubborn perfectionist streak. If it wasn't for my friend (and fantastic maker) Mike Mooney and some of the guys here on the forum helping me out, I don't know that I would have stuck with the craft.

Did you ever sell this?

I did not, actually...after I finished it, I decided I wanted to keep it for myself because I really liked how it turned out and I hadn't kept one of my knives in a long time. I have recently reconsidered that decision, however, so I plan on putting the finishing touches on it once it cools down a bit here and offering it for sale after all. I can let you know when it's ready, if you are interested...

I am slobbering really hard right now, but I'm spending all available money on knifemaking supplies and so unless the price is WAYYYY less than it should be, I can't afford it.
