5160 Buck 117 Brahma

I'm down with no fuller on anything that doesn't need one for weight reduction/balance. In my experience, they only get full of fat when cutting up game.

Can anyone set me straight on what the Brahma designation means?
It doesn’t mean anything anymore.

Originally Brahma meant stacked leather handle blacked out blade flat steel pommel and guard. No fuller. 117 and 119.

Then Copper and Clad came out with the 117 SMALL SPECIAL. Black phenolic aluminum fittings uncoated blade with a fuller. A standard 100 series configuration.

Then Buck started making variations of the 117 Brahma. Uncoated blades, standard handles aluminum guard and pommel. For a while if it was called Brahma it had no fuller.

Then even that went out the window and now it seems all 117’s are Brahma’s.

This thread more or less follows them as they were released.

Looking and thinking back, I’m not sure Buck ever used the SMALL SPECIAL name. It may have been just C&C on that initial run?

Thanks for breaking it down, eveled.
Oooohhhh, that cocobolo & brass.🤤

Hoping they make more 117's soon. March BOTM came at a bad time for me, and I personally don't really like the "Pro" line. While they're nice, something about paying nearly $200 for s35vn & aluminium is a bit of a turn off to me.

Agreed.
The 420hc does everything I need at half the price.
A 117 with D2 and wood added to the existing offerings would be cool.

Personally I think the 117 suffers from a little bit of an identity problem. Even the model number was not unique, "117" being on its third rerun. The original configuration when new in 2016 had a leather handle to set it apart but once that was dropped it landed right between the existing 102 Woodsman and the 105 Pathfinder. It is kind of middling in the middle. Plus, I think a fuller looks silly on a knife that size, makes it look kinda toyish. If I was King at Buck I would proclaim a flat grind and no fuller. Now that would be a knife that could find it's own unique niche identity and following within the Buck product line...(IMO)

i have The 117 in 5160 in dymondwood and I like the size of the handle since it fits the hand better than the 102’s handle. I would like to see the top part of the guard knocked off, make it a single guard on the bottom.

A belt sander is the answer to your dreams.. (and you wouldn't have been the first)
