Here's another combo I just finished up. Working really hard at tweaking my skills, I'm approaching my 4th year as a knifemaker and this is where I'm at. Please critique, good, bad or otherwise............. I can take it. I hope you guys like them : )

- WSSI stabilized chroma brown birdseye maple on both
- 5160 camp knife
- D2 sidekick
- 416 stainless hardware
- removable (via chicago screws) frog style sheath for the sidekick

Outstanding, I love them both! The sheath could be, I don't know, more fancy? Not that they look bad, not at all, but if there is something to improve - it's the sheath IMHO. Other than that, both knives look just about perfect to me - I mean it. Great job!

P.

Thank you for the kind words pafka, and for the critique  In regards to the sheath, I'm working on my sheath making skills as hard as I am my knifemaking skills ;) So much to learn..... so little time in the day :o

I think the sheath is just fine. It is very well made and llos good. Not fancy, but very good. It is a very nice working grade sheath.

The knives look great. The whole package would make an excellent companion on camping trips.

Very, very, very cool.
I personally kind of like the lanyard at the pointy part of the butt, as far away from the tip of the knife as possible. But that's just a personal thing. I expect others like it the way it is on these two knives.
I really dig the echoing blades shapes. They match just right. Not identical, but CLEARLY matching. Very cool.

I think the overall package - knives and sheaths - is very well done indeed.

Thanks a lot guys

Is your preference for the location of the lanyard tube a functional preference or an aesthetic preference ? Just curious and I'm listening ;)

There honestly isn't a thing that I don't like about the knives and the sheath. I think you did a great job!

I think they're fantastic David!

The sheaths are very well made, I'm confident they are of the same high quality construction as the knives.... I just think they would LOOK more on the same level as the knives if you burnished the edges.

Color is personal preference, but with those wood handles I think a light brown dye on the leather would also make them pop even more.

Just my $0.02! :)

Keep it up David!!!

that is a very nice package! the only thing that bothers me a little bit is the stamp. a religious symbol should not be part of the stamp, imho.

Functional! :) If I place them too far up the handle, they're always getting under my pinky finger, which bugs me. Put them as far down as they'll go, and the lanyard stays below my gripping area.

David, that is an awesome set of knives! The sheaths are nice too, but a Nick said, burnishing the edges would make them even nicer. Apply some Gum Tragacanth and burnish with an edge slicker or a piece of antler (or similar) and then use a piece of rough cloth to burnish some more.

Thanks Nick. Edges of the sheaths are now burnished ;).

I ?always? burnish the edges of my sheaths. In this case it was an oversight on my part prior to the wife taking the pics. I didn't realize it until I was going through and editing them this morning :o

And fwiw Nick, your $0.02 has always been worth a lot more than face value to me :)

Thanks for noticing too Chris ;)

Thanks John & T.K.C.

Thanks for the thoughts MSCantrell. I understand where you're coming from

brightred, thanks for your thoughts too. I appreciate it. ;)

Wow David, that's an awesome set!

I think your handle design on this camp blade is way ahead of the one I bought from you a year ago (I'd have to handle it to be sure, but it just looks less constricting but still secure --- I especially like the subtle swell and the butt.)

The black/red/black treatment is over the top nice!

If you were to let me order a copy of this set from you ;), I'd only request these changes :
-that the hunter have a similiar (but smaller) guard to the camper.
-I'm also wondering if it could do with less pins. I wouldn't think that had it been posted alone, but as a true "set" it might look better with fewer pins and the matching guard treatment (knowing that's a load more work.)

Your sheath looks great to me. I LOVE what you did with the piggy-back option --- very nice!

If you're already burnishing the edges, maybe go one more simple step and "antique" the sheath with a little color. You've got enough lines and such that, once highlighted, the antique would take the sheath to a much more finished look.

One more thought about the sheaths, both of them are tad bit "boxy" or square. Around the throat, I think if you rounded the corners or added a little curvature to the throat somewhere it would help. You could also put some curve on the belt loop, to give a better flow to the overall...

I hope that doesn't sound critical --- this is a BEAUTIFUL set, and those are just very minor thoughts.

Love both blades and handle shapes. The blades shapes are two of my favorites. Not the biggest fan of birdseye maple, but that's just me. I don't recall seeing this style piggyback option. I think it's really neat. I, too, like the low lanyard treatment. Great job!

Critical is what I was looking for Eli ;) Thanks  I can do another set to your specs in a heartbeat......... you know where I live :D

Thanks for the kudos blad5 and ckerwin :)

David - This is a sweet package. I really like the handle shape, and especially the curve on the guard of the larger knife. Also the fact that it is a hidden tang, makes it perfect. I think the sheath concept is great. A little tooling on the leather would really dress it up. The thong holes look a little small, but it could just appear that way in the photo. I would give this package a 95. Great work. WOW
