Well, I got to work on some of that 5160 everyone got their hands on. Here is the first piece I made.

Blade is 9 3/4" and 1 1/2" deep spine is near a full 1/4" to the tops false edge.
Spine work by tungsten burr in milling machine for uniformity/
Hardened with 10 min soak in electric oven at 1475f and quenched in oil. Double tempered to 400f for 2 hours each cycle.
Draw sanded with flat bar to 400 grit then buffed.

Guard and skull crusher nut of mild steel. File worked. Wood is Cocobolo.

Here is my question. I have all the stuff to do a hot blue. Should I blue this or leave it as is?

Very nice looking knife, it will look great whatever you do with the finish, but I think an overall hot-blueing would be rather cool. 47 Knuck

Yes That is some of your pile you spread far and wide. Seems to be some sweet steel. I got couple more in the works too. Thanks for the great deal.

Thanks for the interest. the polling votes and nice comments. I believe I will Blue the guard and nut and take a look at it that way. Then decide if I should hit the blade with the blue. Will post when I get that done. Probably going to finish putting handles on the other 2 blades I have going from this 5160 first. Seriously thinking of doing a sword using the same design as the knife above. Just make the blade longer and have more false edge on the top. Whats does everyone think.

I like it a lot. I think a sword with that same design would look great. I have heard that this steel is great for long blades like swords. (I am working on an 18.5 inch over all length chopper with a full height grind outta this steel, thanks to JT from Jtcustomknives on this forum).

wow its that long. i gess we never mesured it just started grinding it. you think thay will let it on the plane. if not just send it back to my house :). good thing you did not have to atack it with files to get that sweet full flat grind.

I am planning on packing it in the checked luggage between the two other longer pieces. ( I did measure out about 12 inches for the blade past where I wanted to hold it......the Fam liked it too, they were impressed!) Sorry to hijack this thread with a side issue

you probabley dont want to use the words knife, plane and hijack in the same post. :)

Yes you probably have the feds on your trail now. I am going to make a sword on this pattern. My only thing is how am I going to harden it. I have some ceramic heat blankets thanks to the heat treat contractors at work. I may be able to use a welder as a power source and do the deed with that stuff and some kaowool. Getting that long of piece evenly hot will be a challenge. Might have to post to find someone with the equipment to do it for me.
