I'm currently working on a double edged tanto style knife for a deployed armed forces buddy and I'm wondering how good 5160 is for puncturing? (sheet metal, layers of military style fabrics, etc.)

5160 is tough enough to take that sort of abuse if the geometry is right. CPM-3V would be an even better choice.

Thanks guys, the geometry for puncturing I have figured out. The heat treat will be done by Peters. I know 5160 makes great choppers, didn't know how it would handle more prying, stabbing type applications.

Don't forget S-7. The S stands for shock resistant. I believe thats what most air hammer bits are made from.
