ya the vegetable tanned leather is the way to go, yep just keep it clean and take care of it and there wont be a problem.
 
Another approach is to apply a coating of Renaissance Wax on the blade. This even prevents finger prints being left on polished blades, great stuff. Museums use it on precious artifacts, good enough for me.
 
What Temperature for the temper?? Or should I do an edge quench? Or maybe spring temper the back and leave the edge hard?? I'm just a beginner and have many questions.
