So, I'm torn on deciding on one of these 2. I've always wanted a 110 with carbon steel, but then again, I've always wanted one in a drop point too. The BG-42 is a final run, but it sounds like the 5160 might be around for a bit. The only concern I have with the 5160 is the fact I work in a facility filled with salt water. I'm not sure how well it will do in a salty environment on a daily basis.

Whichever one I get is going to be a
user, since I don't believe in safe queens.

So, anyone have one or the other that can offer any suggestions? And no, I can't get both, as much as I might want to.[emoji12]

I've got a number of both of these.

They are all nice. The oak covers on one of my 5160s got into some not so good looking laminate. The other oak was good.
The charcoal 5160 I received was good.

The dark (charcoal) covers on my first two BG-42s were sanded or buffed into the lighter under-laminate and looked terrible to me.
I've already put new covers on one and will probably change the covers on the other.
I ordered two more and they are supposed to have all dark laminate covers.
The BG-42 I worked on is the sharpest knife I've ever received with the factory grind. (don't ask how I know) :)

I don't think you could go wrong with either, but be prepared for some maybe not so good looking laminate covers.

I guess for a user that would be okay.

StuntDouble,

You are correct. The BG-42 has been run out. We are doing 4-5 different variations of the 5160 110. You will be seeing more and more of the 5160 in the next year.

Stumps,

Do you have a picture of the knife with the scales in question? Charcoal Dymondwood is usually a mix of grey white and black, I am curious to see what you are explaining.

Thanks,

Hengem

This is the one I changed the covers on;

EDIT to add a photo of the back of the same 110;

Interesting...
You should expect some variation form the Dymondwood, but I agree your sample has a little more white in it than I remember the charcoal having.
I suppose its a good thing you are re-scaling it. Hopefully the others you get are more to your liking...

Stumps. Did you BG-42's come with the distressed brown sheath? Mine is black but has the suede feel of the distressed brown sheaths I've gotten with other models? To the OP, I'd get the BG-42 now and the 5160 later.

They came with distressed black sheaths.

Here is mine once again;

And here is the photo used to sell these knives;

I know which one I would pick every time.

EDIT; I just checked and the seller has posted a couple photos of a knife with a little off coloring on the ends of the covers.

They are still an exceptional value. I have four of them. :)

Thanks for the firsthand pics Stumps. I did notice that seller had a couple of pictures that showed the wear near the bolsters, but it was nowhere near as pronounced as yours is.

My last two of these special run BG-42 Buck 110s came today and they are what I expect in a laminate cover.
These are nice!

Again, these BG-42 110s are the sharpest I've ever received from the factory.

I edited post #4 above to add a photo of the pile side of the knife I posted yesterday.

StuntDouble…I don't see how you could go wrong getting one of these….first, then the 5160. :)

I can't do it... Seller said to have 1 left. I just couldn't do it...

As much as I love BG-42 and want a 110 with it, I just couldn't pull the trigger. I just couldn't....

I think the nail tick is what killed it for me. The scales I'm okay with, though I think I would prefer G10. The price is hard to pass up. Oh well...

I ended up pulling the trigger on one. I've always loved the 110, but the one thing I've wanted is a version with a drop point. With this, I get my wish, as well as a blade in BG-42, a steel I hear quite a few nice things about.

Mine is scheduled to be here by the 8th, but I'm hoping it gets here before then. I can't wait to put it to use.

They came with distressed black sheaths.

Thank you Stumps. Looks like the ad has been changed to show just "distressed sheath" rather than brown. I actually like the look of the black distressed with the charcoal Dymondwood.

Mine is due to arrive on the 9th. I need another 110 like I need a hole in the head, but I just couldn't pass up the BG-42 and the drop point. On the surface, it appears to be the ultimate 110. I'll know soon enough . . .

I just got my BG-42 in today. Stumps, you weren't kidding about the edges on these things. Easily the sharpest Buck I've gotten. Ever. Fit and finish is perfect, solid lockup with no movement in any direction. The action is nice and smooth as well. The scales were perfect as well, without the feathering near the bolsters.

If this is an indication of how things are going at the factory these days, I might have to add a few more Buck's to the stable.

I was able to get one of each, the 5160 in Oak has perfect F&F. The BG42 one should arrive within a week. IMO these 110's are already worth more than the asking price. Hopefully Santa will treat me well so I can get some more of the BG42, if they are still around. These 110's along with all of my Buck knives will be with me until I pass them down.

My BG42 110 came in today. Beautiful in every way. Ordered another one as it may be a once in a lifetime thing. My better half is going to be pissed. Oh well, such is knife collecting.

Well, there's always the "... but Honey (Dumplin'/Sweety/Darling et-al) ... one is for you ... " excuse.

I forgot about that option. She does have a nice collection mainly due to that fact! Thank you Sir!
