5160? Please read!!!!

Reading all the posts, I have to assume you got the wrong steel. If you quenched in all the mediums and it did not harden you probably have mild steel. Can you tell me if the edges are rolled or square on your barstock. Though not definitive, all the 5160 bar stock I have ever purchased had a rounded or rolled edge. Also to save yourself some time and aggravation, if this was to happen again (heaven forbid) forge a small knife shaped object and just quench it. No need to go through all the grinding etc just to see if it will harden. If it does move on if not then you probably got the wrong stuff or mixed it up in the shop. Been there done that. Some go so far as the do a quick quench test just to make sure they did not get a batch of mild.

you cant really see it but this steel is flat on the 1" side and convex on the 1/4" side. this is the piece im going to send to Mr Burke and let him try it. I have given up on the idea of this being 5160, I just like the the challenge of finding out what it might be. Who knows maybe my technique is wrong theres no way to tell until I get the new order of 5160 or Mr Burke tells me what he thinks,This is the first time I have ever tried to use 5160, so I have nothing to compare to.

5160 normally has fully rounded edge, not just the corners. The picture does not look like typical 5160. But like I said it is not a definitive ID.

Im with Mr. Richards, definately don't think you've got 5160.

5160 is pretty forgiving with HT and will harden pretty good, even for those who have absolutely no clue what they are doing (and you certainly aren't in that category). It should have cracked in a water quench, and if it didn't at least harden there, you've probably got yourself a nice big chunk of mild (or some other type of medium carbon steel).

And that doesnt look like 5160 stock to me either. Most 5160 I've seen (and used) has the round sides (like little semi-circles instead of faces on the edges of the stock). The mill scale doesn't look quite right to me either. But of course cant tell by just looking (I'd have to smell and taste to be certain :D ;) ).
