My company focuses on making KYDEX sheaths. We work closely with several knife companies, in our last meeting one of them proposed that we make "tools" from Spring Steel on a more mass scale I'm positive that "knife" is what they meant by tool. What do each of you think on this prospect? Is it even a market we really want to try? If so where should we go with it?

Thank you for any input that you can give

5160 has long been used as a knife steel. For the beginner maker it's easy to forge and HT without having to be an expert .You could make other tools with it also.

I'm confused. You are a sheath company, but are looking to start a knife company based on the suggestion of another knife company that uses your sheaths?

It would depend on the kinds of knives you're thinking about making. There would probable be better steels if you're looking at making something with less than a 5 or 6 inch blade, especially if you're going to outsource the heat treatment.

You say you are assuming they meant "knives" when they said "tools".....have you asked them to clarify and be more specific?????

This thread is a bit sales specific, especially with the info to link to your website. I am closing it.
