I was at the scrap yard today and came across 2 6' square steel box's full of round stock. These were short ends 2-3' long x 4-8" dia. They were marked and I even found a manufacturer sticker on the end of one. It is 52100 probably about 10k lbs worth. Talk about doing some cross section reduction. I picked up a 6.25 Dia bar 33 inches long that weighs 300 lbs. SOMEONE PLEASE SHOOT ME:eek::D:eek:. I could not pass it up. I am busy cutting it into smaller manageable pieces. It only takes about 45 minutes to cut through. I will have to keep an eye on those boxes and see how fast it moves. But for less than a buck a pound I just had to get some. My Kids will be able to use it if I can't.

There is a bunch more of this stuff if any one wants some let me know. I can pick it up and will only charge my cost. I am cutting 3" rounds off the bar I picked up and they should weight about 25lbs. I can ship these in flat rate box's for a reasonable price. And Sam is right, A full size one would make one heck of a post anvil. If I had seen these before I made mine I would have used one of them instead. Heck if you did not like the anvil you could make knives out of it.

I'm sure you got a power hammer or press to whomp those into manageable bars? Otherwise you'd look a little funny with 1 50" bicep :D

Great score there...

I do have a PH and a press so It will work down well. I am going to still re-cut the discs into squares and rectangles to make it a bit easier.

Be a lot cheaper than an anvil. Probably bout $350. Got a quote on shipping 365lbs from Ga to Or and that is what it was.

so your going to have bar stock forged down right :)
i might be interested in so some of it
after J and deker get get done with em i might even try to hammer my own

Hey Chuck,

How much per puond does it work out to. I am thinking that If you could pick up four or five of those bars for me I could pick them up at Eugene. Or I can pick them up either going or coming.

We'll bring him over to the dark side soon......

As for the shipping, I bet it wouldn't be so bad. Remember, in freight shipping, it's not just weight, but dimensions that matter. You're fitting your weight into a VERY small size, which leaves them space for more of other people's stuff. Get a quote for it, you may be surprised....I had 400lbs of G10 shipped to me, which was MUCH larger than that and it was only $175 for about a 1k mile trip. I bet it would be cheaper since the size is reduced.

Also, check with Greyhound freight. They ship all KINDS of stuff as long as it will fit in the compartment under a bus. You didn't think they were making money on the 4 people INSIDE the bus did you? :)

You are truly fortunate, take a look on our fourm - general discussion- "photomicrographs by Rex" you will see how far you can push your steel, my advice - buy as much as you can of the same lot and enjoy consistent steel. Probably this means same diameter. Any help we can give you is here for the asking.

Another thought - as you select your bars, be sure and check for a closed center.

Wow I wish there were scrap yards like that out here. Great score man.

I'm currently earning extra cash to build my press, once it is built I will contact you. As much as I love great deals; you should add a little extra on so you can make a bit o' profit. I would feel like I'm ripping you off if you didn't. :)

Burke,
The cost is .75/lb. The bar i picked up weighed 290lbs. There are a few smaller and many larger sizes there. Let me know how much you want to spend and we can get it set up.

Dan I am adding a very little to help with the cost of fuel .10/lb. If you want to donate to the sawblade fund feel free to do so.

Lloyd, I am going to cut them into more manageable sizes. The largest will be 3x3x6. I am also cutting 1.5x1.5x6. I will work them down from their. If you need bars it drawn out i will do it for cost of propane.
